    Default Best of the Mods

I am both impressed and yet bewildered by the number of mods not just for RTW/BI but also now for M2TW. Clearly they all promise different attributes but I would like to hear of others experience before I submit to all the temptations. The one I look forward to most is The Justinian War but I confess I haave already had a go at Invasio Barbarorum which is closer to my favourite period and I have also downloaded The Long Road which allows 900 turns which I calculate to be 450 years. That should keep me busy until R2TW

Europa Barbarorum is hands down the best mod for any TW game ever.

At least in my humble opinion.

Chalk up another vote for EB... it just can not get any better!

To give you a measure of their popularity, if you throw in their EB Headquarters Developers forum, they have more threads than the Frontroom.

    EB isnt finished yet.

BUt to say which mod is the best is Opinion at best, There are SO many great mods I can give you some of my favorites or ones I am looking forward to.

    SPQR:TW
    The Crusades
    Napoleonic:TW
    Ran No Jidai

EB and RTR are both wonderful mods also, I'm just so used to SPQR now its hard for me to play a slower game with a ROME theme. I recommend all the above, but I wouldnt say one is better than the other, just different.

Sorry to see that justinian TW bit the dust as it was coming round the final bend of the Constantinople Hippodrome. With so many mods skinners and modellers must have little time to play any of the games.

When you dl it you get an icn. When you double click on this icon it then asks you where to install it. It has to be installed over the RTW exe file. In my case this was different to the default because I had RTW Gold Edition. After the installation iscomplete you should get an icentical looking icon on your desk top. When you double click on this you get a flash of RTW and then it begins to load albeit rather slowly.

    Hope this helps

My personal favorites are...EB...RTR Platinum with Ancient Empires Mod..
    and XGM.

There is also a mod called Hegemonia City States that isn't out yet...
    but looks very promising.

XGM was okay, but really only for the greeks (duh!) If you want to play with other factions, EB is the way to go.

I am very sorry to say that the slow loading are very sadly going to probably get worse as more amazing EB features are added in, even when the BETA phase is over and EB is in 1.0+. EB has very complex text file which confuse the game engine. I am sure though that the EB team are trying to speed it all up a little bit however, although they will have to probably sacrifice some features at the same time.

As for my favourite modification - I love Europa Barbarorum too. It is nothing like any other mod I have ever seen before. It has everything a player could ever ask for and its got skins beyond pretty. The slow loading times do bring it down, yet it is always worth the wait!

Seriously though, I've heard enough of EB from a friend that I'm about to reinstall RTW to give it a whirl.

I may have mentioned it before to the original poster, but you could try Goth's All Factions mod for BI. It takes the original BI campaign and does a mini-Total Realism job on it: bigger map, more factions, better graphics, MTW style combat etc. It's very under-appreciated, IMO. You'll find it discussed a fair bit on the RTR forums, although it was finished nearly a year ago and Goth has not returned to modding since.

EB is very impressive as is RTR, but RTR is considerably lighter, and thus alot easier on my aging PC.

the best is definitely a difficult term...
I've played a lot of the different mods now.

XGM is professional, slick, fairly similar to Vanilla in a lot of ways, and dead easy to install. But it adds a lot to the gameplay and has a lot of classy touchs. It's also very stable. I've never had a CTD with it, and that's saying something.

EB is hands down the most detailed and complex of the mods... it really is quite different on almost every level. It's definitely for playing the long game, for those who want detail and reality.

And at the other end of the brilliance spectrum is Blue Lotus. This is my favourite for the atmosphere... it's a fantasy mod set in the far east. Blue Lotus is a bugger to get going and install, and has about 3 little mod patches and so on, so it's not easy, but it is worth it.

Other ones to look at may be Zhaguo, The Fourth Age and Rome Total Realism are all good, solid mods.

You should stop by the EB forums here at the Guild and ask for some help. I'm sure they will be more than accomodating.
