Has anybody ever seen the AI even attempt to head towards the new world at all?
hmmm... I dunno... is the campaign AI even capable enough to support/sustain such a far flung martial expedition? My guess in no.![]()

I don't think so.

I never seen the AI try to venture to the new world or even have ships explore the fog of war. But then again, they don't bother trying to take rebel settlements near their territory, so going to the new world must be impossible for them :P
I've never had a campaing last that long.
Well, I haven't seen the AI try, but they certainly do build carracks and the like in late game if they have the funds. I hope that AI-colonisation is implemented by the programmers after all, just that it happens only rarely.
By the way, the Aztecs are tough if you aren't used to their fighting style and environment. I besieged one of their cities once and they sent a relieving force which I surely would have beaten in normal field combat, but onfortunately there's this nice jungle setting that rendered my cavalry and especially the camel gunners almost useless. Infantry-heavy armies with ample missile support fare much better in this terrain.

Just for grins, I teleported (move_character) a full stack of an English army, currently an ally of mine, right next to the rebel city in South America. He just stood there without doing anything. The AI might not know what to do in those coordinates. They don't move at all. Probably will rebel pretty soon.
I gave the Aztecs regions in Europe once for kicks, they did nothing with them and produced no new units there either. I was trying to have some fun throwing history out but... no luck.![]()

Aztecs don't have access to the normal tech tree at all, so they can't build anything.
Yeah but they didn't build from their tech tree either, that was the problem.Originally Posted by dopp

The Jungle is quite insane there. One battle I fought I literally couldn't see anything! Just randomly trying to run into the enemy. Had to zoom in fully just to see what units were there, and of course when you do that it's useless for actually commanding units.Originally Posted by Brutal DLX
I also have to say the aztecs are rather good fighters, far better than I'd imagine. They seem to easily take down dismounted knights... and I can't imagine stone edged weapons to stand much chance against plate armour.
As for the topic in question. I doubt the AI would be able to get to the new world because the human player always goes "oh, new world!" and instantly sends a large fleet and army. The AI typically cannot match the human player by that point of the game. Guess someone has to get to that point while still having large rich AI factions in the game... and I can't see that happening often.

They don't have any tech tree as far as I can see. They get exactly 2 buildings in the first place. The level 3 stone wall trains their units (and only the level 3 stone wall, the larger and small versions can't) while the Sun Temple keeps them insanely happy. That's it.
The Aztecs are also frozen until someone reaches America. They won't do anything before that.
Just a thought... is it possible to call a crusade on the new world? Do they show up in the list of targets?
Maybe that would prompt the AI into attacking.

I haven't been to the new world yet (I play 1 year per turn) and I would be really curious to see if you can send a crusade there like one of the previous posters said.

And, as for the Crusade question, I haven't tried it myself, but people have suggested getting the pope to call a Crusade on the Aztec cities so your ships get a movment bonus for crossing the ocean. I couldn't call one, because there was one in progress to Antioch and the Spanish had a Crusade army sitting in a ship off their coast... not moving it... so the Crusade wouldn't end.
You need to move your ships slowly, like one square at a time, until they run out of movement for that turn, because the deep ocean won't accept movement orders into the fog of war for some reason.

I dont think that calling crusades will work since i am pretty sure there is a requirement for which cities you can call crusades on
