If you have a fairly modern computer, you should probably get M2TW. Sharing the same engine as RTW, you will feel right at home with it. It needs another patch, but that's on the way.

Otherwise, MTW/VI (buy them together) is a good bet - like RTW and M2TW, it has a lot of variety in its campaigns. STW has very good battles, but more basic and less varied campaigns. With both of the older games, coming from RTW, it may take a while getting used to the older graphics and the Risk style map.

Also, don't forget the RTW mods. Rome Total Realism vastly improved RTW for me. The release of Europa Barbarorum 0.81 is just around the corner.

Finally, I personally have a soft spot for Barbarian Invasion. I just like the premise of shoring up a declining Roman Empire - the atmospheric opening movie is worth the price of admission to me. It also has some very nice mods - Goth mod and IBFD; I think RTR 7.0 will require it too.
