    Default More than 4 Please.

Is there a way to mod this or is this hard coded? Seeing as my Portuguese males don't get many marriage proposals, the ones that do get married should have as many children as possible. More than 4 anyway.

Edit the file descr_campaign_db.xml in the data
directory. Scroll down to about line 75 and look
    for the key/value pair

    <max_number_of_children uint="4"/>

Change this to the value you want.

Thanks for your reply. But I heard making the changes in that xml file, any additional family members after 4 do not show up on the family tree. If that is so, is this hard coded then? meaning not moddable?

Hmmm, I had not heard that. I haven't tried this change
myself but I'll test it tonight to see if 4 is the limit for showing
    up on the family tree.

Thanks. Do you think there is cap on how many kids a couple can have?

Yes. It's probably fairly low too, otherwise the family tree could get WAY too complex. Just think, if you allow even 8 children, the family tree becomes 8^4=4096 children across for the 5th generation (the 1st is just the original king and queen who will presumably have 8 kids). Compare this with 4^4=256 that they chose as the default, and you should see what I mean.

You'd have to play with it to find out at what number exactly the game crashes or stops adding the new kids to the family tree... and even then you might not get deep enough into the generations for all potential problems for a given max children amount to become apparent.

Thanks guys. I guess you could be alot more selective in who marries but I always had problems getting my males married anyway so I guess this would just increase my odds a little.

    Caution!

At least for me, the game became very unstable after making some changes to the xml file. I had backed it up and even restoring it caused the game to CTD. I guess I will just have to live with the 4 kid limit now.

Question Re: More than 4 Please.

Hey guys I'm currently running Rome Total War version 1.3 and was wondering where is this file "descr_campaign_db.xml"? I noticed KnightErrant stated its in the Rome Total War\Data directory but it is NOT there for me. Infact I only have the following 3 *.db files : descr_geography.db descr_items.db and descr_vegetation.db. any further help on this would be appreciated. I have been playing the game fine with all the factions unlocked and only under Imperial Campaign, not sure if it matters. Do I need to upgrade to a higher version than 1.3 for RTW to have this file?

Secondly, Do you guys know of a way through the RTW Console to spawn a Family Member (or a general that once placed into a settlement becomes a Governor)? If there is such a command please post an example of the syntax to type. Thank you for your help all.

If you're playing RTW, why exactly are you asking questions in the M2TW section?

I modded my descr_campaign_db.xml file to allow for 6 children and my game keeps crashing something fierce. Does any other file need to be modded also? I didn't make any changes to any other files. My game has been pretty stable until this point. Running 1.1 patch and no other mods except a couple of personal changes to unit stats.

When starting a new campaign, or when loading an old one? It's entirely possible that changing the value midstream would cause unpredictable errors.

You shouldn't have to change any other file to make it work though. When you say "crashing something fierce" do you mean it tries to load and always crashes, or crashes when you're playing, or what? If the game will not even load, then it's likely you made an incorrect modification to the file that causes the game to throw an error when it tries to read it. Most likely cause in that particular file would probably be... forgetting to put quotation marks around the value 6. You could also have added a space that the program doesn't like, or possibly left out the / or something similar, any one of which may cause the game to fail to load.

I also seem to recall people saying you would never see more children than 4 on the family tree even if they in fact existed, so your problems could be an offshoot of that, though no one else reported crashes because of it.

    Hope that helps.

The game will play as normal for a random time and then just crash and I have to reboot. It was on a new campaign after changes have been made. It happened before a while back and I had to reinstall the game. I just can't keep from fiddling with the game files.
