I found the vanilla speeches to be rather charming actually. Some of the more pious, or crazy generals sometimes said some rather funny things. And sometimes they'd really let you know just how big of a battle this was going to be, and how screwed you might be (assuming, of course, that losing a battle had been possible in vanilla). Though, with the changing of nations (and the new ones) around, I doubt the original speeches would make sense.
