DVD-Rom does not load discs?

Recently my DVD-Rom will not load any of my games. It will load up audio CD’s, and that’s it. Whenever I insert any game, it will come up with the mouse cursor and a disc for around 5 seconds and then it just disappears and nothing happens.

It’s quite strange. I’ve had my PC for almost 3 years now, and this has never happened before. I’m wondering if it’s just a case of downloading some software updates or whether it’s something bigger than that.

I appreciate anyone who can help me out on this.

Does it play non-game DVDs, like movies and the like? If not, it may be the laser for the DVD has gone south.

That's quite possible.

A dvd drive on one of my old computers has recently been throwing up crc errors on media that i know is fine, so it may be an age thing

On the bright side - well, if it's a desktop at least - a pretty good quality replacement can be had dirt cheap. An NEC 7170 goes for around $35 on newegg.
