    Default Rabies anyone?

Leading vets say that they fear an outbreak of rabies if the European Commission succeeds in its attempts to weaken Britain’s tough rules on quarantine.

The Commission is keen for Britain to adopt the EU animal movement regulations that came into force in 2003 so that there is harmonisation on animal travel rules between member states

Yippee! another winner from the accursed EU. Take no heed that rabies is endemic in the east of the continent, as long as there is harmonisation. The moron who thought this up should be placed in a Room 101 type of room, with Mr. O'Brien and some rabid rats.

    Time for them Rabie shots.

Quick question does the UK have laws that require your pets to have the rabies shots?

Now England should not remove the quarntine if Rabies is not a native occuring virsus on the Island, because shots will only take care of your pets, not the native wildlife.
O well, seems like 'some' people decide to ruin a perfectly valid threat. Nice going guys... doc bean

    Not that I'm aware of.

It's because we are an island nation that we can pull up the drawbridge, so to speak, and keep rabies out. IIRC the last case of rabies in the UK was back in 1968.

Ahh...even further back...I think I was thinking of an animal cull for suspected rabies in the '60s.

In the UK the last human death from indigenous classical rabies occurred in 1902, and the last case of indigenous terrestrial animal rabies was in 1922. Most cases of rabies in the UK now occur in quarantined animals, or in people infected abroad. Since 1946 there have been 22 deaths in people infected with rabies abroad.

Another island-nation (our State of Hawaii) had very rigorous quarantine requirements, that got relaxed in 2003 (now you have to show rabies-vaccination documents, vs the old 4-month quarantine). Hawaii is still the only rabies-free state in the US.

I guess they "harmonised", too. :)

Sounds like equal unprotection under the law. We have cycles of rabies epidemics in my part of the country, and certain species of wildlife really bears the brunt of it, raccoons, skunks, bats, possums, feral cats & dogs mostly. It got so bad a few years ago that they tried dropping medicated bait from airplanes in the hopes that the some of the targeted species might be saved.
