Default César Victor's "Great Generals" AAR

I was inspired by a fellow forumer (anyone want to guess who?) to make my own. I'm not going to do this as often as I'd like because I want to get on with playing the game. Everytime a new general who I think is worthy of one comes along, I'll make one. For now though, this will do.

    Secundus Chaerea, Julii General

    Part 1

    Part 2

    Part 3

    Part 4

    Part 5

There may be the odd typo but I think I made all the right corrections. In the future I'm gonna make a longer one like Barbarossa but I thought I'd give it a shot as I like making things like this.

This story is completely true, taken from my current Julii campaign, but some of the pictures needed to be remade in custom battle.

    Any comments would be appreciated.

Well done, great story of the life of one great man Ceasar Victor!

In the end how many command stars/management scrolls/influence wreaths did your favourite veteran receive?

    I like the autobiography-like style.
And the sepia coloured pages really give the feeling of olds pictures, memories...
Making the story with a 60 years hindsight must have been difficult ?

    overall,
    Trully a promising AAR !

Just one point you should work out in your next AAR; explain how your main character got into the Julii family (I know Secundus married a daughter, but how did he stood out of the crowds of pretenders in her father's eyes)

and maybe you could insert a map to show his travels

    Keep up the good work

There were a few things I omitted from the story and this was one of them. I wanted to keep it to five pages so I cut a few things to make sure it fit. I'll keep the suggestions made in mind for the next one I make. Thanks.

Not my finest general ever but he is my most favourite. The Flavius Julius character mentioned in the story was my finest.

He was good, well done on developing such a man. The best I have ever got a general to is 5 stars

If you want high command star generals, make sure when you attack, the battles odds are under 2-1 in your favour. Then, when you gain large victories, you'll get points that build up your command stars. You seldom get anything for killing a foe that you were always going to beat because you outnumber them 10-1 or something. That's why when you try to train new generals by having them take on nearby rebels, always send the minimum force required. It'll take a while, but you'll soon have 9-10* generals (well, a few retinue characters might be needed too).

Great story telling by the way. It's one of the few AAR I've read through from start to finish.

I remember a year or two ago wanting to write a similar type of thing myself. I saved hundreds of screenshots from my campaigns, but didn't think anyone would be interested in reading such a thing. Now there's loads of them! When I finish putting together my modded campaign I might have to finally have a go myself.

Thank you for the comments. I look forward to any new AAR made. Reading Barbarossa's is like an uphill battle as I've only read a few and he has loads of chapters. Reading a new one from start to finish would be cool.

I sent Secundus out to battle rebels on his own, just like it said in the story I only ever used Barbarian mercenaries if the rebels heavily outnumbered me.

I have two new generals I'm training up and I may do another "Great Generals" AAR on one of them. One is currently fighting alongside Augustus Victor (Yes, he's STILL alive- 94 and looking good), laying seige to my first British town, London. It will probably be him (he is now faction heir after Secundus the Honest died) so I gotta make sure he leads an interesting life.

From one AAR writer to another - congratulations I've really enjoyed reading this and I love the way you have used one general's story to tell us about the campaign. It really feels like history, reading one guy's account and imagining what was happening around him. Really nice work

    Thanks!

As I re-read it though, I notice some dumbass writing errors and grammatical mistakes I wouldn't normally make. It's because I did it on MS Paint and editing it would have been bloody annoying so I'm probably gonna do the next one on Publisher or PaintShop. I'm also going to spend more time on the writing section and make sure I'm a bit more diverse with my language.

I agree with 'Poulp' - the auto-biographical approach is a great way to lay down an AAR as is the old-fashioned look to your work. Impressive, and thanks. Looking forward to future installments.

Okay, I'm doing the first few introductory pages to my new AAR and have come to a crossroad on the style of my pages. In the honest opinion of you, my fellow Orghers, would it be better to keep the sepia colouration on the images or use the original screenshot colours? The sepia effect does look cool but I think that the AAR will lose life and interest if the whole thing is in brown and, ugh, dark brown. Opinions?

César, your style is original and engaging. I would vote for you to keep the sepia tone as it really fits the style of your AAR. I've not seen one before that was written as if it was the diary of a particular general, and the aged pictures add to that effect. Still whatever you choose, I will be following this with great pleasure

I gotta tell ya, I LOVE the Germans. I havn't had this much fun since the start of the Julii campaign. I have the first AAR almost finished. I just gotta do an introduction... yeah, I left that to do last. Barbarossa, I have no idea how you do this so well. It's very hard lol.
