    Default ROME: The HBO Mini-Series

Watched the entire 1st season (on DVD) of HBO's mini-series; ROME, over the past weekend. I tend to watch lengthy series in this manner as it better suites my life style.

Good acting, good sets and, although some liberties were undoubtedly taken for the sake of dramatic interest, the story line does appear to follow reasonably close to historical events. IMHO, good entertainment in a genre that I have an interest in. Looking forward to the DVD release of season two several months from now. (The series is currently running on Sunday nights).

My question to any of you: Have you watched any/all of the series - and - if so, what are your thoughts?

This may be in the wrong forum. I'm sure it will get moved.

I LOVED Rome. It's one of the three best things on TV (the others being The Sopranos and Prison Break). I think Ciaran Hinds did a superb job as Caesar and I was dissappointed they killed him off so soon. But, hey, you can't delay the inevitable, right? The acting all round was superb. Polly Walker especially. She lived and breathed the part of Atia.

My only conern is how weedy and young Octavian looked. This guy becomes the first Emperor of Rome ffs and he looks like a pre-adolenscent boy.

I look forward to series two. I hope we see more of Mark Antony and Octavian grows slightly before his ascension to power. I'm also intruiged what will become of Pullo and Vorenus, they seemed to go slightly opposite ways at the end of series one.

It's been so long since I saw series one. I'ma buy it on DVD once I have the money. I wish the BBC would hurry up and show it on TV before you Yanks get too far ahead!

    Conclusion- 5 Star TV

If you want an more accurate imitation of tghe guts and ethos of C1BC Roman politics then Sopranos is actually your best model of the series mentioned her. Rome is great fun and as TV history goes surprisingly close to the truth. The adolescent Octavian is spot on - even when they dress him up in Early imperial sculpture he still looks like a weasel.

Series 2 seems good so far. THe Pullo Vorenus thing seems to be a bit soap opera, but the political side of things seems to be good.

Hi, i loved Rome, it really gripped me, particuarly the double crossing politics of the senate and the determination of Gaius. Is S2 on in the UK now? If it is im gutted ive missed the start of it!

I am probably one of the few people who is yet to see this highly popular history show. So that I can stop feeling terribly left out could one of you guys please inform me, your resident idiot, as to which channel it is on and when?

If you like that series, there is an old BBC series that was on in the seventies called I,Claudius. It follows the Imperial family from the time of Augustus thru Claudius. It is more of a play actually, but it is a hoot. I got a copy last month thru Netflix.

I don't think it has yet. Dumbass BBC are lame. Channel 5 should buy the rights and show it on Mondays before Prison Break (though this is unlikely, BBC co-produced it )

Sorry Cesar, just couldn't resist. The thing is I am currently playing a Norse mafia game so decided that changing my avatar till it is over would add to the realism. Come on though, you have to admit that it is slightly better than my old one - perhaps I will change my name to tie in with it

Anyhow, back on topic, thanks for telling me. I'm English so it's the Beeb for me. Thanks again.

Too bad Rome is discontinued after two seasons.

I sincerely wish that HBO could recycle the set & customes as to make "The First Man in Rome" by Colleen McCullough which is about the story of Gaius Marius (the one who started the "Marius Reforms") and Sulla.

It would be great to see Roman legions in action against the Numidian skirmishers, German hordes, Samnite rebels and the massive forces of the Pontus king (whose name escapes me), which was all covered in the novel.

I'm probably in the minority, but I just couldn't get into it. It's heavy on politics and intrigue and battles/action is almost non-existant. I was hoping for something like the Simon Scarrow novels set to the small screen, but that probably would've cost too much $. Just my two denarii's worth.

Say it isn't so! HBO is discontinuing 'Rome' after only two seasons? If this is the case, that's way too bad!
