Thread: Halberd Militia

  1. #1

    Default Halberd Militia

I am slightly disapointed that Halberd Militia is not a common unit among the Catholic factions.

Effectively, Milan, Venice, Spain, Portugal and Scottland have no polearms units. While all have some form of pikemen, I still think that they should include Halberd Militia as well (maybe except Scottland as they have heavy 2H units).

After all, in late Middleages, polearms were most popular infantry weapon.

    Any opinions?

I think Venetian heavy Infantry is a polearm unit, so take Venice of your list.

I think the venetian heavy weapon looks more like a warhammer than a polearm, i haven't really paid attention to the animation though, but I don't think the unit works like a polearm unit, I think they are closer to a sword armed unit.

Early period foot was mainly spears/swords, then as the armor progressed mace, flail, war hammer more to crush the bone inside the plate rather then stab or slash, also the pole arms 18'-20' long really came in after people figured out how to defeat the heavy cav and "yes" it became the foot soldiers main weapon of choice then the sword/mace or what ever they had as a secondary weapon.

The Venetian Heavy Inf. is armed with warhammers which indeed is more lika a mace than a polearm.

I am disapointed with the amount of polearm units in MTW2. In MTW each Catholic faction had at least 3 basic ones (Militia, Militia Sergants, Halabardiers), now a max is 2, while some still have none.

I wont hide that Milan and Vennice are some of my favorite factions, but I still believe that they lack some polearm units (pike does not count), which after all were 'standard' units everywher in Europe in the late period.

Haleberd was one of dozen existing polearms. Most of the infantry formations used mixed types (guisarms, haleberds, partisans, long mace, bardiche).

not only availability but marching speed is dooming one of the morst reknowned weapon troops of the middle ages. its a crying shame that the halberds are not only scarce but they march so slow you cant get them into battle without running them to death.

Turn off Spear Wall, and they move faster.

But still slower than your other units, even slower than Pikes with phalanx mode on, as a matter of fact.

Still, there´s nothing like a line of 4-6 Halberd militias to hold a line, better than pikes, as a matter of fact.
