    Red Fury

    1600, Italy

Tommasino covered his eyes from the blinding light, riding his packhorse even further, the surrounding landscape bleak, crows crowing from the dead, horrible trees. The bad dirt road crackling under his horses hooves. There was smoke on the bleary horizon, a good sign, life was around this area

Tommasino had not seen any one for at least two full days, and the village he was looking for was not where it was located on his old map. But with the sign of the smoke, it meant there must be a tavern near by, good enough to recover his spirits for the next day, it was now around mid-day, the hottest part of the day, the Italian sun shining directly onto him. The sweat poured off him, make him wet. He couldn’t wait for the good water to pour in to his mouth, already imagining it in his mouth, he sped up his horse. Something flashed in the surrounding trees, moving like a shadow, what was it; it couldn’t be bandits, could it? There was no sign of life on the roads all round, and another fact was that the trees were dead, leafless and rotten, there was no where to hide. It was probably just a mirage from lack of water. Tommasino kept on walking, caring about nothing around him, once again his thoughts on water. The once again the shadow flashed, but on his other side. Now he was seriously scared, it wasn’t bandits, and then what could it be? He spurred on his horse, racing to the town, the air got thicker, a cloud of smoke moved in. He could not see anything as the heavy depressing fog moved in. He started coughing, something smelt like a fire, Tommasino’s eyes started watering, the fog then started to fade, a patter of feet could be heard around him, he must be at the town, but where were they?
“Hello!? Anybody?” He yelled, the patter of feet kept going, and voices could be heard, but as if very far away. Then something hit him. Hard. He fell off his horse, the horse neighing with terror, not his horse, he reached out for his horse, ready to hop back on, and there was nothing there. Now seriously horrified, he ran forward. And the mist lifted off. And Tommasino gasped, there in front of him was everything he had thought impossible. The village was defiantly there before, but it had been mysteriously been blown away, by the looks of it. Only single bits of wood remained, ash covered the ground like snow. The smoke came from several fires, all burning on the remains of what looked like human bodies, who could have possibly done this? The village was just gone. No blood, no buildings and no signs of battle. It was something Tommasino has never seen before; it was amazing, but scary. He trudged on, sulking over the loss of his horse, and looked behind him at the mist, it was gone. It was seriously freaky now, and he was chilled to the bone, this Scary village just gone like some sort of tornado hit it, and the weird mist which disappeared when he had gone through it? And now he remembered, the shadow, these things linked coincidentally together and he was horrified. It was time to get to the next village. He walked out, when the shadow flashed, what was it this time?
“Who are you?” yelled out Tommasino, no one replied, he seemed relieved no one had replied, and kept on walking, when he heard snarl, he stopped. Scared. What was that? He slowly turned around, to find him self face-to-face with the creature f his nightmares, he looked in shock, what was the thing? It was twisted and red, and red flaming eyes and it had a tail.
“Hello, Tommasino, I have been told interesting facts, like for one, you have been chosen by the select few” said the thing, Tommasino didn’t have a clue what the thing was talking about, and backed away slowly.
“Did you do this?” asked Tommasino, pointing at the surrounding village,
“Yes I did, and I will finish it up when we are, done” said the thing. The thing poked at finger at Tommasino’s chest, and Tommasino was frightened,
“Who do you join, the Heavnic Forces, or us?” said the thing, Tommasino didn’t know what he was talking about once again, and also didn’t know what to say. His ears and eyes hurt from the surrounding fires.
“Sorry, but I don’t know what you are talking about” said Tommasino, and the thing stepped back, and walked away, all of a sudden, he disappeared. Tommasino was mystified. That, supposed animal, had just disappeared right there, and he had a tail, Tommasino had so many questions. But shrugged in his mind and started walking away, when a mad cackling came from nearby. He looked around, there in the shadow of the fire, stood a hooded man, a black cloak and black hood, and fro what Tommasino could see, no eyes. The man fingered a red knife in his hands, and was laughing. “Hi, um, how did you just get there?” said Tommasino,
“Stupid Humans, I am no man, I am a Shadow Lurker, and have been sent… by people, as you have a message” said the Shadow Lurker. Tommasino nodded his curiosity on full run now.
“You have refused to join my leader, and shall suffer the consequences” said the Shadow lurker. He raised his hand, and threw his Red Knife, which blurred as it flew through the air. Tommasino put up his arm for protection, an automatic reaction, but the knife hit him in the belly, but he was sure it was heading for his head, the pain shot from head to toe, and he screamed din pain, but managed to mutter a few words,
“Who…who...i-is your … l-leader?” muttered Tommasino, but the Shadow lurker was muttering something as well, and Tommasino caught the last few words,
“And bring down upon him, the ashes of our dammed” and the shadow Lurker pointed at Tommasino with the last few words, and Tommasino screamed in even more pain, as he burst on fire.

    Chapter 1

    Siberian Mountains, 1986

Jack jumped over the couch, landing on the soft mattress of it, the T.V buzzing away, the cool air of the Siberian Mountains flowing through the house, it was minus 4 degrees, and the snow had blocked them in. It was freezing inside, and in some spots, the snow was getting in. Basically, they were stuck, but the power was still running. They had a two-storey house, and 3 bedrooms, one for Jack’s parents, one for jack and another for his Big Brother, Phil, Jack looked at the T.V, there was some story on the mountains. It down right boring, and was about to leave, when the weather forecast came on.
“Hey! The weathers on!” jack yelled up stairs, there was the thud of feet as everyone came downstairs, and bolted over to the couch. The bad music of the weather forecast came on.
“To day we have had an bad snowstorm ripping through the mountains, over the Eastern Part of the Siberias” said the Weather man, Phil snorted,
“Well that’s obvious” There Mum made shushing noises and pointed back at the T.V,
“And we over at the Western Siberia’s it is a very different story, we do not know what to believe but it is reported to be over 20 degrees around the area, but no one has come out, we will hopefully report later on with more info on this strange event, I hope you enjoy your day” finished off the Weather Man, and the music started again,
‘Did I just hear right?” said there Dad, Phil nodded,
“It hasn’t been 26 degrees here for years” said jack, it was impossible, the weather was so high,
“Why couldn’t we be over at the Western Siberia’s?” asked Phil, no one answered, but Jack also wanted an answer to that, and was going to ask the question again, when his Dad trudged off outside to clear off snow, and his Mum went up stairs. Jack and Phil looked at each other, and shrugged. They were obviously keeping something to themselves. But it was not anything to worry about.
Phil went off to help there dad, and probably to badger him even more, and jack flicked over the channels, seeing what else was on.
There was a small program on all the lost mountain climbers, and jack watched it casually, until he started drowsing, and felt himself going to sleep, the snow kept hitting the windows, the T.V going. He heard a change of music, and barely noted that the program had changed. When he heard something from the T.V, it was an report on 12 reporters, who had just disappeared on the main road.
‘The main road? But someone would’ve seen if a tornado took them’ thought jack, and is thoughts were right, it was impossible to get lost on the main road, as it was the busiest road in the Siberian Mountains, and one of the only roads around. He got up and went upstairs, disturbed by this announcement, but wanted some sleep. He got to his bedroom and collapsed on his bed, and looked out of his bedroom window. A nice sky, with clouds of Snow moving across it. He fell into a deep sleep, on his comforting bed. He slept for what felt like hours, and finally stirred. It was now later in the afternoon, he got up and changed into something else, and sat on his bed again, fiddling with a hole in his bedcover, thinking of something else to do. Maybe go outside? He got up and looked out the window, looking at the snow covered trees, his father and brother back inside. He looked at the sky, it was now a bit redder, probably from the sun setting. He looked away, and opened the door, then went down stairs, his dad and brother were watching T’V, some action show on, and his Mum was in the kitchen, and by the smell of potatoes coming from the kitchen, she was cooking dinner. He smelt the air again, sucking in the lovely smell. His dad looked around,
“Finally, your up, bit of news coming from inner mountains” said his dad, jack nodded and sat down, still quite tired, but interested in whatever news he was to receive,
“Well, it is something quite disturbing, and I think of you old enough to know, but the reporters were found” said jacks Dad,
“Uh, that’s good, where were they, and what happened?” said jack, not really concentrating on the subject,
“Well, they were, uh… found, dead, dumped” said his dad, jack looked up, now fully awake after this bit of news,
“Who would do such dreadful stuff?” said jack, wondering why someone would kill them.
“That’s the thing, they have suffered serious burns, and look like they have been tossed” said his Father, Jack pondered over this, when Phil suddenly spoke up.
“But how could someone get 12 people over 50 kms in two hours? With no roads, its impossible” said Phil, dad shook his head,
“its not impossible, because it just happened”
“it sounds supernatural” a silence hung in the air after that remark, each of them thinking on it,
“Don’t speak such nonsense jack, there is no such thing as the supernatural” said dad, and at that point mum came bustling out of the kitchen, plate full of dinner in her hands, Phil and Jack raced over, ready for dinner when there Mum put an hand out to stop them,
“Uh, well to earn this, you have to go collect wood for the fire” she said with a smile, at once Jack and Phil protested, there Mum shook her head. Shooing them away with her hands, they gave up and stormed out of the house, slamming the door, they headed to the woods. Not talking, Jack felt a tiny bit scared after what happened to the reporters. They collected wood, and were far away from the house. Jack saw an very good piece of wood, and raced over to get it, thinking of dinner, when he tripped, blood in his mouth, Phil laughed out aloud,
“Serves you right for running” he laughed, jack was infuriated, and walked off, angry at Phil, what did he know” He probably hasn’t even cut his knee his whole life, let alone his lip. All of a sudden the ground shook, Jack grabbed a tree for support, what ever that was, it could’ve started an avalanche on mountains like these. He sprinted back to where he left Phil, and found him standing there, looking in shock at the sky. And was like he had been electrified, he just stood there. Jack walked up to him, and looked at where was looking, and looked back at Phil,
“What ya looking at?” asked jack,
Phil pointed at the sky, mouth open, when Jack saw what he was looking at. Instead of normal white, fluffy clouds, there was dark, menacing red clouds, with what looked like lightning coming from the clouds, but it was red. Jack wasn’t as stunned,
“This is just like at the movies!” said jack in awe,
“We have to get back to the house”
    “Why?”
“Those clouds, just, you’ll know later” said Phil, and with that he ran off in the direction of the house, Jack raced after him, struggling to keep up. They crashed through there surroundings, when they reached the house. It looked okay, Phil raced in, and Jack came in after him. The house was in a mess. The floor was strewn with all there kitchen stuff, these was a little fire burning. Jack carefully tipsy toed his way towards the lounge room, when there was a sudden bang, and the roof shook. Jack stuck his head through the door, the couch was tipped over, the television destroyed, an there lovely dinner all over the ground. Phil came out, completely stunned, and went up stairs. Jack followed, jacks bedroom door was ripped off, and there was a massive hole in Phil’s bedroom roof. But there parents bedroom door was open an little. He looked through the crack. His mum was son the floor, but there was an cloaked hooded man, wearing black, holding his dad by the throat.
“Where are they?” whispered the cloaked man, his dad gasped for air,
“I don’t know who you’re talking about?” said his dad, the man tightened his grip.
“You know who I am talking about, the next generation” whispered the man again, the cloaked man dropped Jacks dad to the floor and stopped, standing still. He then whipped around looking straight at Jack and Phil, and he pointed. When jacks dad pointed his palm at the man, and an powerful blast of wind issued from his hand, blasting the man, and making an hole in the room, an loud bang issued. The cloaked man was thrown out the hole, and landed in the surrounding forest, there dad ran over to jack and Phil, and pressed an sheet of paper into there hands, and whispered,
“Good-bye my sons, I want you to run out of the Siberia’s, run! I have loved you my whole life, and remember, I shall always love you, and my soul will always be part of yours, now run my sons!” jack started crying, and Phil pulled him, there dad following, they raced downstairs, and out the front door, and there dad pushed them away.
“Now run! Run so they never find you!”
They ran, when the ground shook even more times, they reached the road, when they heard a horrible shrieking, an and an tremendous bang, the ground heaved. Jack sobbing, Phil pulled himaway, and they moved along the road, heading for the nearest village,
“What does the note say?” sobbed jack, Phil looked at it,
“We are to go out of the Siberias, heading West, and find an small village called Rankovick, and speak to an old man, called Frank Ulmer” jack nodded, and they trudged on, there was an great adventure ahead of them, and they had no idea what was ahead of them.

    Chapter 2 of Red Fury

They kept walking, Jack exhausted from the days results. He then took notice of there wondrous surroundings, they were next to an Mountain, snow covered it like Fairy Floss. On there other side was the white Slopes, and the White Forest, and beyond. They were walking on a snow-covered road, the snow had stopped falling, and it was heating up very fast, the snow melting like Ice-Cream in the Midday sun. Jack was thankful that the cloaked man was behind them, away from them, the man had an, strange, un-safe feeling about him.

“Why don’t we try to get someone to come? Flares? Stop some cars?” asked Jack, Phil kept walking, then shook his head,
“We don’t even have flares, and there is no cars along this road. Anyway, it would be highly dangerous to do that” said Phil,
    “Why?” asked Jack,
“That cloaked man, he was looking for us” said Phil, this was an startling bit of news to jack, and it took some time for him to think of what he was going to say next,
“And you know how?” asked jack,
“I don’t but it is just the feeling, they were looking for some people, and it just feels like it should be, us.” Said Phil, jack understood, he felt like he knew the cloaked man before, like he had seen him before, but, he hadn’t. Not of what he could remember.

They kept walking, sucking in the mountain air. To think that 4 hours ago jack was waking up from an nap, looking at the clear blue sky. Now he was exhausted, looking at the menacing red sky. He looked up, studying the sky and air. Without looking down, he spoke.
“Why do you think the skies like that?” asked Jack,
“I don’t know, I never knew the sky could go red like that, unless there was fire in the clouds, or there was red smoke” said Phil, Jack was going to ask if he saw any smoke, when there was a small humming. It didn’t feel safe to be on the road, and jack felt like they should get off. At once.
“I think we should get off the road” said Jack, Phil nodded, and the jogged into the cover of the trees. A short while later two cars came racing around the corner, flicking up snow, and cutting the corners close. They raced past, and jack could continue to hear and see them race off to the other end of the mountain. They then came out and continued walking, until the noise was far behind them. They found a good spot and slept for the night, thinking of the days events. It took them two weeks to cover the Siberian Mountains. Over the time they became tougher as they lived with in nature. Eating wild berries, at one time Phil vomited as they ate a very wild one, which had gone sour. They ran into now one, completely ignoring villages, the village they were heading to was 10 km’s outside of Siberian mountains, in the plains. There it was much warmer, and more food. Hopefully they had lost the Cloaked mans tracks, and they sometimes doubled back to make sure. Then one day, they went over another hill, and into the plains of Siberia. Jack was amazed by it. Here was Eastern Russia, and villages dotted here and there, roads were more often, and there was a slight humming from the nearby main road. There green lush plains, the snowy mountains behind them.
“maybe now we could get a car?” said Jack, hope in his stomach, Phil shook his head,
“About another day and we will be there, do not worry” he said, jack wasn’t worried about time, or how long until they got there. It was his stomach which was the problem; He was starving after weeks of eating wild berries and the occasional deer.

They walked down the slope leading to the valley, and trudged through the bush land. The occasional bird chirping away. When finally they encountered human life. They came upon a village, the biggest one Jack had seen. There was over 2000 people in the village it seemed, a massive number in the Siberians. The first person they came upon they asked where the place was.
“Excuse me sir, could you please tell me the name of this place?’ asked Phil, the old man looked at him.
“Rankovick. You boys look fairly rugged and in bad condition, how about you come over to my house and grab something to eat?” asked the old man.
“Oh yes please, we’re star” jack was cut short by the look on Phil’s face.
“We would love to, but we have, business to attend to” said Phil, the old man nodded.
“Well if your ever wanting company or a good talk, my place is down Roona way” said the old man, Where was Roona? Wondered jack, but the old man was gone before he could say anything. Phil walked off, motioning for Jack to follow, and they walked down the streets. There were no roads here, and about 50 cars, all not out yet. Some of the houses were still simple wood, but most were brick and concrete. The streets had signs, and they saw that the local tavern was near by.

They jogged to the tavern. It was quiet inside, and was made of wood. It was two storeys high. Jack and Phil went inside, the bar was nearly empty. Only some late night drinkers were still there, half asleep. They walked up to the bar man, and he looked up from counting the money in the register.
“Could we please have directions to where a Frank Ulmer lives?” asked Phil,
“Uh! Old Frank, he lives down Roona way. Lovely old man, lives by himself. He has lived here for some 30 years. Some people asked why he moved from France, he said he was waiting for something” said the barman, but when he had said down Roona way, Jack and Phil were already out the door. The door slammed shut behind them. And they looked around, where was Roona way? They then noticed a name under the nearest street sign, saying Roona Suburb. They stumbled down the way, and looked around for Frank’s house. There was no sign of the house. They then saw a flash. It came from the nearest alley. Phil ignored it but Jack was worried, he squinted, looking for what it was, when it flashed again. This time someone stepped out from the shadows. It was an cloaked, hooded man, It the cloak and hood were black, it was the man from there house, there hunters! He approached, an red knife sled forward from his arm. And he raised his arm. Jack urgently tugged at Phil’s sleeve, and Phil looked over. He was going to yell out. When an strong hand came from inside an house. And dragged jack and Phil inside. They were trapped! The door was locked. Jack turned around.
    “Oh!” gasped jack.

    Chapter 3
    Broken Water

Jack looked up, and was surprised to see it was the old man, who was peeking out the key hole.
“Looks like he’s gone” said the old man, the old man shuffled into his kitchen,
“I knew they wouldn’t stay long” he said, and he beamed at Jack and Phil. Phil looked like he was not going to say anything, and just stood there. SO jack decided to talk,
“Uh, we have to be going actually” jack just had a wonderful idea,
“Do you know where a Frank Ulmer lives?” asked jack, there was a sparkle of amusement in the old mans eyes,
“Uh, good old Frank. He’s quite a beauty, handsome really” said the old man,
“Uh, that’s nice of you to say, do you know him?”
“Yes, in fact he is a great friend of mine” said the old man; Jack could tell he was not lying by the look in his eyes,
“Great, can we meet him?” said Phil excited, it was the first time he had spoken,
“I’m afraid I didn’t catch you two boy’s names?” said the old man,
“I am Phil, and this is jack” motioned Phil towards jack.
“And your last names?” jack wondered why the old man was curious, people didn’t just hand out there names around the Siberia’s,
“Um, our last names? Well” Phil and jack glanced at each other,
“Our parents never told us” said jack, looking at his feet in embarrassment.
“I thought so” said the old man, “because your Parents lived in the Siberia’s, and came from America” said the old man, Jack looked up in amazement, how did he know? Then he realized. It was kind of obvious,
“And you two just got over the cold, attend home school and love potatoes” said the old man with an smile, this time both Jack and Phil looked up, How’d he know they liked potatoes, the old man had an smile which split across his face, making jack feel better.
“Because I am Frank Ulmer” said the old man, relief flooded through jack, there little adventure was over, now they could return to Siberia’s or America! Phil handed the message which there dad had given jack and Phil to Frank, and walked over and sat down on one of the kitchen chairs. Franks eyes scanned over the message, over and over. He then walked into his bedroom, and they heard a good deal of noise. Jack and Phil looked at each other mystified, and peeked into the bedroom. Frank had a suitcase out, no two suitcases out, and was packing stuff which looked like the contents of his cupboard, and then Frank rushed away and got stuff from his draws. Jack and Phil quickly withdrew to where they were before, and Frank came out.
“We’re leaving tomorrow night, all of us” he said with a stern look at Phil, Who was about to protest. Jack was tired after two weeks of sleeping on the ground, and walked into Frank’s bedroom, where there was a mattress layer out for him, he fell asleep at once.
    **********

Jack woke up with a yawn, noticing how warm it was, and temporarily didn’t know where he was. Then he remembered they were in Rankovick. He got up, stretching his muscles, which groaned in protest. Jack trudged out into the kitchen, ruffling his hair, to find Frank and Phil sitting there, and deep in conversation.

“So it’s definitely us, right?” asked Phil, Jack didn’t have a clue what they were talking about, Frank nodded. The look on Phil’s face was amazing, and his eyes flickered slightly over to Jack.
“Morning” muttered Phil, Frank leaned back, watching Jack. Then Frank got up and walked to the door,
“I’ll be back soon, no causing trouble, and don’t leave the house!’ said Frank sternly. Jack nodded, as did Phil.
“Good” And Frank creaked open the door, and the sunlight poured in, the buzz of talk coming in from the street. There were people badgering Merchants for more stuff, traveling in packs, one had an cute dog, but these scenes were cut off as Frank snapped shut the door. Phil sat down next to Jack, and they sat in silence for minutes,
‘Why isn’t he speaking?’ thought Jack, he looked over.
Phil’s head was leaning back, looking at the roof, his eyes closed. A peaceful expression his face as he snored slightly, deep asleep. Jack chuckled and closed his eyes, absorbing the peace and quiet of the house, the slight buzz as people talked outside. Then the door creaked open, and sunlight once again poured inside. Jack opened his eyes and looked over, it was Frank. He was holding several bags of food, murmuring to himself,
“Oi! Wake up!” said Frank, Phil snorted a same time as he said that, Franks face twisted into a smile. He pulled out a bucket from the kitchen cupboard and filled it with water. Jack snuck away, dreading when Phil would wake and see Jack at once, Frank tossed the water onto Phil, he jumped like he’d been shot, and spat out some water. Soaking wet, he wiped his eyes. Jack roared with laughter, as did Frank.
“Never…do…that...again, an alarm clock better” grunted Phil; he stormed off, into the bathroom to dry himself. Jack stood where he was, watching the bathroom door so he could start laughing at Phil again, savoring the moment of when he finally got his brother. Phil appeared, jack was about to start teasing him when he felt a giant splash, and massive amount of water went over him, going down his back and making him shiver. Cold as, jack turned around in shock. Standing behind him with two buckets was Frank, grinning.
“We’re not all immortal to water” he said grinning; now it was Phil’s time to laugh, and he laughed hard. Jack also spat out water, and walked forward slightly. He snatched the bucket out of Franks hand, and filled it with water, then tossed the whole bucket at frank. With lightening reflexes Frank kicked the bucket out the window, which shattered, glass throwing it self over the floor, but Frank couldn’t avoid the water, which splashed over him. Frank grinned,
“ya caught me there. But you have wrecked my house” he said, waving his hand over the mess. But Frank suddenly pointed at Jack, and then Phil.
“You have better get some sleep, our trips this afternoon, and we will be up all night” ordered Frank, jack obeyed and went into Franks bedroom, where he collapsed onto the mattress on the floor, Phil came in a while later, also collapsing on the bed next to Jack. Phil fell asleep at once; jack was amazed he could get to sleep so fast. Jack heard muffled swearing from the kitchen, and slowly lifted himself off the mattress, curiosity going, jack got up and creped over to the door, where he could spy on Frank without being seen. Frank had a cloth, and was trying to soak up all the water, and get the pieces of glass; he stood up, rubbing his back. A look of frustration went over Franks face, and he threw the cloth away.
“I’ll do it the easy way” muttered Frank; he pointed at the water, jack stood stunned, the water slowly raised to his finger, forming a small sphere. Jack was amazed, how’d he do that? Then slowly Frank clicked his fingers and the water disappeared, moments later Jack heard a thunderclap outside, and it started raining. These powers seemed supernatural, was Frank human?
‘It’s probably just a coincidence, nothing to worry about’ thought jack, calming himself. That was until Frank pointed at the glass, and it flew into the window, forming an window again. This time jack was fearful, maybe Frank was the robed man from there house, and he was undercover? Jack went over it in hs mind, but was startled when he saw Frank heading towards the bedroom, jack sprinted over to his bed, fear running through him, and jumped into his bed, pretending to be asleep, Frank came inside, and layed down on the bigger bed, minutes later small snores came from the bed. Jack couldn’t sleep with the combined snores of Frank and Phil, but managed to doze off.
