Thread: How to deal with caetrati?

Default How to deal with caetrati?

I am having some trouble dealing with caetrati in my current campaign.

My problem in a nutshell is their ap melee attack rips apart anything heavy I throw at them (even my elites like the mask wearers or the diodataskeli) and I cant outflank and charge them as the armies im facing are literally full stack caetrati so the comp just sends a unit of them at each one of my units who then get murderised :).

And my light infantry isnt very good so they wont work...

So people who have done a spanish (cant remember the proper name lol) campaign how did you deal with these armies?

As I am quite stuck about it...

The only COA I can think of is raising a few armies completely consisting of diodataskeli and spamming the caetrati armies with them...

But tha'll take a while lol (About 45 game years per army :()

I have had some limited success by hiding my cavalry and then waiting till my infantry is engaged and then charging but I cant chase each unit and the regroupers kill my cavalry then finish my infantry.

Caetrati are somewhat overpowered in 0.80 IMO.

    use archers.
It sounds like he's playing with the Lusatonnan, wich don't have any archers. Balearic slingers are good though, if you can find them.

And/or use skirmishers with javelins to reduce their numbers. Caetrati don't have much armour fortunately. They have "very good stamina" though so it's unlikely that you'll be able to tire them out much this way.

Use your own Caetrati, or any of your own heavy infantry like Loricatii Caetratii, Loricati Scutarii, Dosidataskeli, and Ambakaro, and you shouldn't have any problem.

Are you fighting Moskon's*sp* army? Cause thats a different case, since his army is larger then normal and has super exp it seems. Then just use your cavalry to charge them to death. Experience or not, a charging horse and lance in the chest your gone.
I shouldn't have to live in a world where all the good points are horrible ones.

Is he hurt? Everybody asks that. Nobody ever says, 'What a mess! I hope the doctor is not emotionally harmed by having to deal with it.'

skirmishers will really hurt those guys as well as calvary a good calvary charge from behind will end any their threat.

I think the factor here could be the difficulty settings?

I dont have any caetrati of my own, and the dosidataskeli I have sent get killed not too quick but they get cut apart by slightly higher numbers of caetrati (they wil always fight atleast 2 units of them which will kill and rout them eventually)

As for the ambakaro, those guys are useless, I had a single caetrati rout 2 of them :/

I am playing on medium, with upgraded dosidataskeli (gave them the armour value for chainmail, felt and scale instead of the 22.

I am shocked at how my guys are being ripped apart.

Luckily though on medium dosidataskeli can beat a unit of skirmisher cavalry instead of being routed by it like they are on hard...

Shouldnt this be happening or something?

    EDIT

    Am I unlucky or something?

    And what is moskons army?

And ive given up fighting things with cavalry unless they are already engaged, as a cavalry charge to anything other than the rear of an unengaged unit for me equals large casualties and if a poorer cavalry (like curisi) a rout.

I have a theory about what has caused certain aberrations with some 0.8 unit stats which I don't care to elaborate until I have completed more tests. I was not aware that the Caetrati specifically were having problems, but if they are than that would go along with my theory. Hopefully we'll have some of the problems fixed for the next release.
