Don't know about ancient Germanic warriors, but in medieval times scabbards were often hung in an angle, attached with two straps of leather to the main belt (which hung indeed from the shoulder). The belt around the waist was then fastened over the first one; keeping it in place and so.

It's really a nice picture. Could you perhaps post or PM [links to] some of your pencil sketches? I was impressed by the one you made from the legionnaire a few pages ago and it got me curious... (I'm an amateur myself)
