Default Why I love this game (or... exactly how critical IS the general?)

Arthurian:Total War mod... brilliant mod, btw, very underrated.

Anyways, early in the game I'm mopping up some rebel provinces around the main concentration of Saxons on the Island... don't want to fight a two front war when I decide to push the invaders into the sea. I've just taken one city and am moving on to the adjecent region when I spot a large army moving into and then north of my region... I put a spy on him but nevertheless lose him.

Figuring is off harrassing the Angles, I move in on a lightly defended motte and bailey to my immediate west. I beseige, select my siege equipment, and end turn... in the off turn, the missing army shows up and hits me from behind. I try to withdraw but do not have the movement to get away, he attacks again...

So, on a flat plain, I am forced to make a stand. First instict was to fight defensively, but seeing my soldiers on the battlefield and what I'm up against, I see that's basically impossible... only shock can win this fight.

I have 2 spears and three cavalry. The only positive, really, is that among the cavalry is King Arthur himself, and a full strength unit of the historical equivilant of Knights of the Round Table (using generic terms here so those not familiar with the mod can follow).

My opponent deploys in foot first, three lines formation and advances. I have no missle, so i'm in a staggered two-line formation, with my two units of spears up front, spaced just wide enough that my general's formation can punch through.

The rebels have 6 across the front line (4 spears, 2 heavy infantry), 4 missile units, and 3 cavalry, including the captain. 1,009 bodies in all, against my 241.

The rebels make no pretense at subtlety... they advance directly into my lines. Quickly scanning the front line once they're in sight, I read the units left to right- swords, spears, swords, spears, spears, spears. I then await their approach and counter charge, sending my larger (108 men) spear unit in between the 2nd and 3rd spear unit, and my small spear (52 men) at the first.

Oddly, the rebels seem more concerned with keeping their line intact than anything else and stop advancing while my spears buckle their main line. Two units on 6... and three heavy cavalry with no opposition to getting to the flanks... if only my spears hold.

Did they ever! Charge after charge into the flanks and backs of the rebels, with Arthur standing behind the spearmen to lend encouragement. With 7 minutes left until the battle resolved automatically, the entire rebel force was in flight.

    The statistics-
Arthur 241 men deployed, 976 kills, 128 men remaining

Captain Rhun, 1,009 men deployed, 133 kills, 10 men remaining

I entered this battle with little hope of still having my king at the end of the day. Oddly enough, immediately after the battle, I was attacked again by the rebels, this time with only 133 men, who i easily routed.

    Well done adembroski!

This thread could help you work out how effective the general was in that risky combat.

So morale AND attack bonus... I believe Arthur in A:TW has 8-10 stars... glad I found this out, be able to balance the mod I'm making a lot better.

How does one obtain this Arthurian Mod?

I tried playing as Romano-British after I opened the factions, but when I hit the arrow to start the campaign, I found myself down in the desert of Northwest Africa, and no Army, nor settlement in sight. We can be sure that there were Berbers hidden there though. I zoomed over to Britain, but again there was only darkness, (but I'm sure that there was ERE and Celts hiding in it.)

    Any suggestions?

    Hi Celt Centurion,
Sadly Arthurian: Total War is a total conversion which focuses on the fight for Britain after the remove of the troops of the Western Empire. However, this mod may interest you if you desire to play as the Romano-British in vannila BI. It, through scripting, allows you to play as all of the great factions of Barbarian Invasion. Good luck, cheers!

Thank You Omanes Alexandrapolites. I may install that tomorrow after I put my BI disc in. The disc does have to be in before installing doesn't it?

I don't think so. I believe that all you need is a normal installation of BI with no other modifications installed to install it.
