That looks more like a pyrrhic victory to me. Unless you were pinned from both flanks, I'd be disappointed to lose most of my army. Heroic victories and 10:1 kill to death ratios are pretty commonplace with RTW. Still if you had no cavalry, phalanxes can be vulnerable to more manoeuvrable foes. You obviously enjoyed the encounter, which is the most important thing so congrats anyway.

Well, it's a step in the right direction. Eventually, my friend, you will win these type of victories:

    Congratulations Hospitaller_Order and welcome.

Can you tell us something about the conditions please? Did you attack or defend? How was the terrain, which units were involved? How important was that single conflict? A turning point because you could now expand, was it a desperate defence against a sneak attack into your homelands?

One of your enemies was Julii, those Roman armies can be nasty.

Yea it's best to give details of victories so we can share in the experience. Sometimes the best victories are ones where you actually get annihilated, yet pull things around. Heroic victories by themselves seldom tell much of a story, and other times they're boring anyway.

For example, in MTW, my most memorable victory was when I defeated an army of 4000 with about 1200 troops. That is nothing though. People do much better. In fact, I messed up completely, having routed the opponent's original units, I tried to force the reinforcements off the field before they could form up. Massive mistake as my men became exhausted fighting UPHILL(!) and I ended up losing nearly all my army as my tired men routed. Chaos reigned free as my men ran for their lives, reforming only to get slaughtered. I made a last ditch defense on a small hill with a few archers, spearmen, militia and a unit of mounted crossbowmen against a force two-three times larger. The enemy approached in pieces, and I managed to break them with the arrows again and again, but they'd reform, my men would break, I'd rally them, but then I'd be flanked and more chaos occurred. My only saving grace were the slow firing mounted crossbowmen caused fear by firing into the rear of the enemy. This caused the enemy to rout again, but exhaustion prevented my men from finishing them off. To cut a long story short, the next 15 minutes involved about 300 men chasing each other around the battlefield, desperately trying to rout each other off the field. With just about 3-5 badly depleted units each, the battle could swing either way.... and it did, about 4 times! I had to keep retreating to high points to gain an advantage where the mounted crossbowmen could fire off a couple of volleys before the enemy got close. Somehow from the brink of defeat, my mounted crossbowmen and last unit of wounded town militia routed the last 3 enemy units. It was the most satisfying victory I'd have, even though 20 minutes earlier I made the worst tactical decision of my life!

It must have been - the Julii and Gauls never ally because of those bearded guys, the senate's, orders, unless of course they were protectorates, although the Julii usually wants the Gaul's heads on pikes in the forum of Rome when controlled by the AI.

Hold on.... I had the same unit and faction set-up for my first quick battle. Me as Macedon against Gauls&Julii. The Comp must have a list of situations to fight from or somthing.

I keep getting loads of heroic victories, but thats what happens when you have an army that consists of triple silver chev nomad archers and 2 single gold chev units of clibarnii.

not to be too much of a downer, BK, but in those victories it looks like you had more troops than the enemy and also had a general, while they only had a captain.

that said, it still is impressive to have the enemy not kill any of your troops. but then again, in the first screen capture, it looks like you killed 3 of your own through friendly fire.

i have to be careful of that when chasing down routing units, as i often have my missile troops go hand to hand towards the end of a fight, then they resume shooting/throwing at the routing enemy, hitting my cavalry!

    Post Re: Awesome Victory

That always happens to me. I only like friendly fire if the enemy is the victim of it.

Lol, i know its not great, the enemy sucked too

Im just having fun killing 800 and losing nothing, lol.

EDIT: Not all the armies sucked, the only reason I won one of them was cuz I knocked out their nazgul with a catapult and trolls with fire arrows, and catapults with cavalry, lol.

EDIT2: the only guys I lost were general's cavalry, those come back :)

HAHAHA!! Got to love the post marius troops against the barbarians. Here's the scoop on my awesome battle I just had. Wish i could figure out the whole screenshot/hosting pics thing. Then maybe you all could bask in my glory!

VH/VH, v1.5 patch. no mods, large unit size

Event: Brutii troops have taken over all over Greece. The Greek States are gone, along with the Macedonains and the Thracians. My Empire reaches from Italy to Constantinople, and my attention is now turned to the empire of Pontus who is currently distracted by Armenian and Seleucian raids. Then, from behind the northern Balkans, comes a huge Dacia force, marching for Constantinople. Unluckily for them, Constantinople has just been revamped with high stone walls and the most civilized high tech army the world has ever seen. To make matters slightly worse, a large Pontic force loads up on thestrong Pontic navy, and is aimed for Constantinople. After a quick raid of my diplomats, i discover that Pontus and Dacia had formed an alliance, and wereattacking from both sides.

I quickly drew up a large navy in hopes of dettering the Pontic empire, but their superior numbers got the best of my galleys. With reinforcement troops 3 turns away, things dont look so good for Constantinole. Sure, we have the upper hand in troop quality, but defenitely not in quantity. The next turn after the destruction of my doomed fleet, both the full stack of Dacia and full stack of Pontus converge on my location. I pray that the walls of the city will hold them off for as long as possible.

The next turn, I sally out against these massive enemies of Rome and prepare for combat. With an enemy to the north-west and south, the only way to go is through the enemy or into the ocean.

    Troops: Dacia-
10 warbands including 4 ladders, 1 siege tower.
    5 archers
    2 light calvary

Pontus-11 units of spearmen including 1 ram

    Brutii-5 Urban Cohorts
    5 Archer Auxilia
    no general
    3 Praetorian Calvary

Battle Deployment: With Pontus having only 1 ram and attacking the gate, I put 1 unit of Cohorts in front of the entrance and 1 Archer on the wall. I put 1 unit of calvary in the town center, aimed at the Pontic army.
On the other side, I have my Cohorts covering the middle gate on the walls, with the archers on the flanks. the other 2 calvary on the 2 road entrances into the town square. So far, so good.

Battle Begins (Pontus): Immediately, the Pontic army races towards the gate with their rams. As my archers and towers rain flaming missiles on them, they hold their ground and remian strong. As they ram my gate, burning oil is dumped on them, only fueling thier rage and determination. The Cohorts line up, get in a defensive formation, and await the coming onslaught. They could tell it would be a long battle.

Battle Begins (Dacia): I watched as the towers all form up on the right side of my northern gate, so I rush 3 of my Cohorts to that side, leaving one to stand against the troops in the tower. As the archers and towers rain death upon the Dacians, I realize that the only troops left away from the gate are the Dacian light calvary and archer. Seeing a grand opportunity for a flanking manuever, I let my archers strike down the horses with fire, who evetually retreat. With almost all of their arrows gone, the auxilia prepare for the screaming warbands. Meanwhile, I tell 1 unit of calvary to run outside the eastern gate. This should get interesting.

Pontic Assault: The gates are down, the Pontic troops are in my city, and my cohort is being pushed back by sheer numbers. As my archers continue to pour arrows onto their backs, the Pontic troops do not falter and keep pushing. I set one of my calvary up into position so that when the cohort starts to fail, they will be ready to charge. As my archers run out of ammo, I force them to clim down and give support by attacking the right flank of the spearmen. May Mars be with them.

Dacian Assault: With thier troops on the wall, the cohorts struggle to keep control of the towers and gate. My archers, out of ammo, are told to run to the towers away from the Dacians and flood the streets, waiting for their descent into my grounds. The Cohort guarding against the tower triumphs over the warband and goes into the street as well, in front of the archers and awaits for the opportunity to make, or break, everything they have fought for.

Pontic Finale: Seconds go by and one by one my cohort and auxilia start to fall. It is now down to about 67 cohorts and 41 auxilia versus 200 spearmen. I wheel my second calvary unit to the left flank and strike hard, breaking one unit. The fear starts to set in for the Pontic troops as they see they are surrounded. 5 minutes after the initial charge, and all that's left of the Pontic army starts to flee. I give my cohort and archer auxilia a short break while the calvary chases down the fleeing enemy. The Pontic army is no more.

Dacian Finale: Remeber the calvary i had ordered outside the western gates? This is where they come into play. With most of the Dacian infantry on the wall and a few inside the city, my calvary heads north, goes around the northern corner, and charges straight into the Dacian archers, who had proved to be non useful for the battle anyway. After about 2 minutes of fighting, all of the archers are dead or running, and I divert the attention of my calvary into the back of the Dacian infantry through my own gates. With most of the cohorts on the wall dead or fighting to the death, a majority of the remaining Dacian infantry are fighting what was left of my archers and cohort who had been fighting the Pontic army but were rushed to the northern gate. As the gates open, my calvary smash into the back of the Dacians and most units start to rout in terror. I put every single unit I had into fighting off the Dacian force, whose numbers were now down to his 300 to my 135. After a few more calvary charges from behind, the job is done.

Results: Constantinople is saved, but for a heavy price.
    Dacian deaths: 1300 of 1312
    Pontic deaths: 880 of 880
    Brutii Deaths: 879 of 986
    HEROIC VICTORY!!!
