Rich Text Format. Can also be opened with wordpad and most other Text editors. Wikipedia is always good at explaining file extensions.

.rtf is bigger than .doc, but it doesn't rely on word to be viewed

RTF is really, really useful. For one thing, it seems to be immune to the table corruption bug that Word has had for the last four versions. Also, it translates seamlessly between, say, Word 2000 and Word 2007, something which cannot be said about DOC. As sapi said, it can be opened from any word processor, with no problems.
Do not shy away from the RTF. It is good mojo.
