(maybe) Game doesnt know what faction I am

I was playing as Milan, and got a Council of Nobles Mission to blockade Tunis. After two turns I was expecting the reward, but got a failure message. I figured I had run out of time while blockading.

Several turns later, I get a mission to take Algiers. When I took it, well withing the time limit, I got a failure message saying another faction had taken the settlement, when it was clearly mine, and the moors had ruled the city throughout the mission. Does anyone know what happened? My theory is that the game lost track of the fact that they gave the mission to milan and that the army was milanese.

In the second case, there wasn't a crusade in progress against Algiers, was there? That happens sometimes in a crusade when you add units to the crusading army just before assaulting; you have some units that aren't technically part of the crusade and the game seems to think it was taken by someone else as a result.

No crusade, though there were some leftover crusade mercs (fanatics, great cross, etc.) I figured I might as well use. Could that be it?

I think there are 2 mission types to take settlements. One is where they say invade it or something like that and the other one say persuade them. I think you might've been assigned the second type. Which in this case you need to send a diplomat over and talk them to death. I do agree that sending your troops over and taking the settlement shouldn't result in mission failure.

I've had this before, too. I've been explicitly told to capture a settlement (by force), I've done so, and then I've been informed that another faction occupies the settlement. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

i once eaven got a mission to take my own settlement

but i think that was pre-patch

As for the first (blockade) mission, some of the blockade missions require you to blockade the port for three turns, if it was only blockaded for two turns, you ran out of time. Also, there is a difference in the mission to annex a settlement and take a settlement. If the nobles request you to annex a settlement, that's a diplomatic takeover. The other one is a request to just take it by military action. If you take a city with your armies and the mission was to annex you get the mission no longer necessary failure message.
