It is annoying, the thing you have to remember is that the formations are pre planned. The Romanii formations are in EB but the problem is that the game decides the pre battle formation based off unit types. ie, heavy infantry, Light infantry, ect. Early Triarii being a phalanx unit causes the game to pick a more phalanx style army. The problem goes once you get the reforms and the more mobile Triarii. A good example of this is a Galic army I made that had some light but mostly heavy infantry, I was quite surprised when they took to the field in chessboard manipularii...

Sorry but I don´t understand your answer well. Do you mean that the game has the chessboard formation but you have only the formations that the game chooses for you prebattle? If I have early triarii I won´t have it as the game chooses for me a phalanx style army. So if I have an only cohortes legion I should see the chessboard button? I am gonna test it in custom battles ASAP.

Pretty much what I meant. Get Hastati, Principe and Late Triarii in even numbers and you get the chessboard effect. Stray too far from what it wants and you'll run the risk of none faction formation. Not sure if it was your screen shot but I saw a funky arrow head formation when tried with the later legions, which is a Galic formation I think.

It was not my screensho but I have tested it just yet with:
    1 general
    10 Cohortes Marian
    2 Gallic auxilia cavalry
And I got my soldiers spreaded in an arrow as formation. But the buttons go on being the vanilla ones, I will try more. I think that formations should be chosen by the faction not by the troops recluted as it has bad results at the moment, I don´t know if it is harcoded.

I think that there are some cross-wires here. Blingerman, we cannot change the formation buttons that appear when you group units together as these apply to all factions. What Sdragon was talking about is the formations that the AI uses when it deploys on the battlefield (which we can change depending on certain factions), but these do not apply to the player because CA supposed that the player would want to make use of the terrain rather than start with a default formation.

At least that is my understanding of the situation.
