They can be applied to vanilla, but if you really want challenging battles you should install the full mod. DarthFormations are not compatible with Europa Barbarorum, but
Thorloff created a special version for EB: you can find it in the EB forum under unofficial modding projects.
Incidentally, if you enjoy EB and you want a real challenge, you should try Arthurian Total War. It's probably the most challenging R:TW mod available.
