Default I've been playing on the wrong assumption of game mechanics

The reason for this is because I assumed things were the same as it was in Rome. In Rome, the income displayed on Cities was the bottom line. However, I tihnk in MTWII the income displayed is gross profit instead of net income (before the allocation of country-wide costs such as army upkeep and salaries) So in Rome, just because a city was showing negative income, it doesn't mean you acutally should abandon it or something because it may be paying for your overhead.

Another thing is the whole auto calculation thing. In Rome, if you autocalc, you're always getting shafted. However, I've found in this one that if you autocalc on sieges you can relaly minimize loss. It's also helpful in later stages as you get sick of manually fighting sieges.

Third thing is the fact that population is no longer so bad. In Rome, there was a big problem with squalor. Therefore, I always exterminate cities with different prominent religion. I'm not sure if that's still a thing to do but it might make a difference.

p.s. some might argue that army upkeep is not truly country-wide as each city needs garrison to make it stable, but for simplicity sake, let's assume it is.

For the first one - I may be wrong but i believe that each city pays completely for the cost of its garrison and only shares the burden for field armies

With regard to squalor, the later patches on RTW capped its effects at a lower level, which helped a lot, and that seems to have carried over to M2TW. The introduction of castles to M2TW with their great public order bonuses does a lot too. I think there are also quite a few more possibilities for buildings that increase order (churches, militia buildings, government buildings, inns/taverns etc.) than there were in RTW, with bigger bonuses faster.

I'm about 180 turns in and have yet to even have a riot in a city, let alone a rebellion. I probably have 15 huge cities too. With a little attention to public order buildings, squalor is nowhere near as fearsome as it was in 1.0 RTW.

The only time i've found it difficut was as the byzantines.

When you're squashed betweeen teh muslim and christian worlds, both spamming priests, it's very hard to avoid the huge public order hits that come from religious differences.

Catholics have it easy in that regard...
