Ancillaries(which is what "retinue" is called), comes from the following:
1. Certain buildings in the settlement you are in
2. Finishing buildings as a governor
3. Fighting a battle
4. Taking a settlement
5. Joining and fighting jihads/crusades
6. Taking specific settlements
7. Spending time outside a settlement
8. The religion of the region your character is in
9. Doing the above at a certain time in history
10. Random chance at birth
11. Training an agent with certain buildings in the settlement
12. Your command, dread and chivalry rating
13. Agent activety will give ancillaries for your king
Explanation:
1. When you have a character in a settlement, he will get ancillaries from certain buildings. You have a random chance of getting them each turn, some are high, some are low(this applies to all ancillaries). Examples: with a brothel, your governor has a chance of getting the adultress ancillary each turn. With a Castle Library, you have a chance of getting a librarian.
2. This is basically the same as the first one, except that it triggers when you finish a building.
3. What ancillary you get from battles depend on the outcome. If your general fought and killed a lot in the battle, he will get veteran warriors. If you lost the battle, you will get soothsayers to help the morale of your defeated warriors.
4. Can't remember what you get from this, but I do believe there are some triggering on occupy.
5. When you join/finish a crusade or jihad, you will get crusader ancillaries, like templar knights, chivalric knights etc.
6. When you capture the settlements in modern day israel, lebanon, syria and egypt, as well as constaninople, you have a chance of getting those holy relics. There is a set of christian relics and a set of muslim relics for all settlements. The chance of getting them are 3 times higher if you take the settlement when you are on a crusade/jihad.
7. If you spend time in the wilds(ie. outside settlements), you have a chance of getting ancillaries like scouts. The ancillaries you get depend on wether you are in your own, neutral or enemy lands.
8. The religious feelings of the province you are in gives you ancillaries. Pagan Magicians, for example, comes when you are in a province with a low percentage of your own religion.
9. There are a few unique ancillaries in the game. These are only available at certain dates in the game. To get them, you have to do one of the aboves, at the specific time in history. As a consequence, these ancillaries are harder to get.
10. There are a couple of ancillaries you can get at birth, like mentors and tutors. The chance of getting them is random, and you can't do anything to improve the chance.
11. When you train an agent, they might get ancillaries depending on the buildings in the settlement they are recruited. For example, if you have an alchemy school, your assassins might get a pistol.
12. If you are a chivalrous man, you'll get ancillaries like the chivalrous knight. If you are dreaded, you'll get dreaded knights.
13. If you use a lot of spies, eventually your king will get the Spymaster. If he's using assassins, he'll get the Master of Assassins.
