The more obnoxious update is when you go to Augustan from Marian. Same kind of setup, only wherever you have a Marian MIC - which is a whole lot of places. But by then you should have a solid portion of the map, so your per-turn income should give you some flexibility.
I'm just about to reach the Imperial Era (I've had a highly ambitious guy waiting around for nearly 20 years) and I have nearly 6 million. Money definately isn't a problem.
