NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (CNN) -- A former member of the U.S. Navy was arrested Wednesday in Phoenix, Arizona, on charges of espionage and providing material support to terrorists, the Department of Justice said.

Hassan Abujihaad, formerly known as Paul R. Hall, 31, was arrested on a federal criminal complaint. He is alleged to have provided classified information to a London-based group called Azzam Publications about a U.S. Navy battle group as it traveled from California to the Persian Gulf region in 2001.

Leavenworth would be a fitting prison for such scum, although I doubt he'd last long... not that I would shed tears. Too bad he was discharged.

Aid and comfort to the enemy - sounds like treason. A short rope and a tall tree would be appropriate. Certainly, he does reflect well upon other Muslims in our armed services.

EDIT: Gah! I meant that his bad conduct does not show how many Muslims fight hard for America, not that he somehow makes them all suspicious and possibly treasonous. Like how the actions of a few Japanese-Americans in Hawaii in WWII did not help when it came to recognition of brave Japanese-American soldiers.

Perhaps a trial before the lynching? You know, for old times' sake.

Seriously, if convicted this person should be harshly punished - it intrigues me that he is apparently only facing 25 years. Perhaps he should be made to show some porn to minors so he can be hit with a real jail term?

I'm not sure why his conduct reflects at all on other Muslims who serve - any more than the conduct of secular/Christian soldiers convicted of torture in Iraq reflects on their colleagues. Aberrations are aberrations.

Just as your post reflects well on non-Muslims on our forums.

perhaps CR's post went a bit skew whiff? I thought he might meant that this persons actions would not be welcome to other muslim members of the US armed forces.

Which I can see. In theory their fellow servicemen would realise that one bad muslim has no relevance to the loyalty of the other muslims in the services, but being realistic, not all of them will see it that way.

Is espionage a Muslim invention? I guess not...

Hmm, wheather you like it or not, Americans depend upon traitors to fill the ranks of their....well everything. It is no suprise for me that the greatest asylum for traitors there is unwilling to enforce punishment on its own traitors.
And why? Simply because recycled traitors are the real basis for US survival as a world power and foreign traitors make good US patriots.
And I can give you a good list of those traitors: Enrico Ferini, Pacepa, Oleg Penkovski, mafiosos, not to mention the original inventor of the submarine......... All this guys betrayed their countries and became good US citizens. Why should the US punish traitors?

And Republicans do you remember Vadim Benyatov Don?Yep, the Guy who was released by Clinton is now charged in Romania for industrial espionage. So, this Muslim spy could be usefull...again.

Well, the traitors who started our nation were mostly homegrown rather than imported and recycled, but they did achieve the needed result that transforms a traitor into a founding father....they won.

It is also true that any number of individuals have emigrated to the United States who would have been -- or were -- labeled as traitors by their birth countries. For the most part they have come to the USA, embraced our freedoms and culture, and taken a new path forward. It is, indeed, one of our sources of strength.

As to your list, I would suggest that Fermi not be upon it. The others are political spies or criminals -- they earn the label. Fermi opted out of a racist dictatorship which is not quite the same thing.

We punish those who betray US. Punishing other people's traitors --assuming that we weren't involved -- would be a bit presumptuous. The most we would do to someone who betrayed Romania is to return said person to Romania.

Yes, at Ellis Island they asked your name and country of treason... laughable.

Why does the title say Muslim? That has little to no signficance in this event.

I considered the title carefully, along with the content of the original post.

I decided that since the accused appears to have changed his name to embrace Islam, and then allegedly chose to inform groups with suspected links to Islamic terrorism, then the title had some justification.

It's a bit brash and moves an agenda certainly, but pretty much all our titles do that.

Just as the conduct of some of Christian soldiers reflects well on other Christians in the amred services.... it makes no difference...

Well of course. I was writing on the assumption that he is guilty, of course. The only use of a high tree and short rope for an innocent would be to make a swing.

OK, sorry to bite your head off - I should have been more charitable, as English Assassin was.

But the title of this thread already got my hackles up, as PJ's use of the word "Muslim" to define the suspect almost seems designed to encourage the kind of denigration by association I mistakenly thought you were guilty of. I would have thought "Al-Qaida traitor" or "terrorist traitor" would have been more appropriate terms. The source title is more careful: "Former U.S. Navy sailor arrested on terror charges".

Come on, that man could be usefull again to US. Imagine this, thay send him to a Gay Prison with minimum security. Than, tired of being gang-raped, the traitor confeses everything. Presuming that, it is obvious why they're giving him such a light punishment.
Heck, we're living in the world of information.

    Heh, exactly my first thought.
Ask MI6 after WW2 when the Soviet spy ring was run by a Soviet spy. A painful experience.

We have been told that a lack of informers (which are basically spies) has been a problem in intelligence gathering since 2001 even when offered a lot of money. No one was shocked that the CIA amongst others was trying to turn potential assets. Why should we be surprised that the enemy does a similar thing?

Of course in the Cold War or even against China etc it is more a game of hide and seek. Spies are caught and then either asked to leave the country or are swapped. With the modern events the enemy will kill the ones the catch and can not be traded with as they aren't Diplomats.

It's been 6 years. You caught one. I hope that all the others just didn't make the press...
