    Question historical expansion

    hello
I’d just like to say i love EB and it shows you guys have really put passion into designing and producing such a wonderful mod, anyway what i was gunna say was...

I love to play as the Romans and i am at the moment fighting the second Punic war
lol..well what i like to think as the second Punic war
the thing is i really like to do things historically correct
and roman expansion is quite confusing at times
everyone knows about the famous Gaul when that was added to the empire
but really if anyone could help is give a timeline of the expansion of roman forces in the punic wars, and the conquest of Greece

i have tried to research but i, a humble AS classics student knows little of pre Caesar expansion

    if any one could help?

    Thanks

If you head on over to the RTR forums they have a guide called Quintis's Guide For Playing Romans Historically (or something like that.) He has all of the natural expansion, with a timeline and tips on how to apply this to the game.

If you have time on your hands, Get a copy of Polybius' Histories (Penguin Classics markets a version under the name of 'The Rise of the Roman Empire'). I played my Roman campaign by that. Its very readable, my only complaint would be that the translator is sometimes a little free with using modern names, where I would prefer to see originals. But that in no way detracts from the exellent translation.

I second this. Quintus' guide is absolutely fantastic and could apply as easily to EB as it does to RTR. I still refer to his guide for legionary formation, as well as age minimums for governance. I've done his historical Roman expansion more than once and had a great time doing so, but am currently writing my own history in a 0.81 game.

The early bits are the Illyrian war, Rome's first territory out of modern Italy. Then, they had the 1st Punic War, taking Sicily (and probably Sardinia+Corsica with it) and I think some bits of Spain. After that, I'm a bit hazy. I do know that the middle east was acquired much later: Turkey at the time of Pergamon's collapse, fought for before Caesar became dictator. At around the same time, Caesar conquered Gaul. After he was made dictator for life, they took Egypt. By the time Octavian was Caesar Augustus, he went and finished off Iberia, and a few parts of Turkey. During his rule, Germanicus also took large parts of Deutschland, but failed to establish any real footing. I believe it was Claudius who first got Britain, and much/all of England/Wales was taken. The largest extent of Rome was when Trajan pushed into Baghdad.

Yes his guide is pretty good. I used to use it when I played RTR.

Here is a map for reference

    Hi,

out of the same motivation i put up a little list for myself. The dates are mostly from wikipedia, so they might be some years off.

    Here goes:
    275 BC Southern Italy(vs Pyrrhos)
264–241 BC Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica (first punic war)
218–201 BC Hispania (second punic war)
    200–197 BC - (vs. Macedon)
    192–188 BC - (vs. Seleucids)
    168 BC Macedon
146 BC Greece, Africa (third punic war)
    133 BC Pergamon
    64/63 BC Syria
    30 BC Aegyptus

Not entirely accurate, but fun. Roman expansion and decline + Byzantine decline:

I forgot where I got this.
