    Default korinthian question

    I was looking over the main website faction previews and there are old photos..of old build units..I kinda miss those guys..thay looked rather nice why where thay removed?

    It would be better to see some athenaioi hoplitai instead though...

    They were removed because it was decided there's enough hoplites as it is, and other factions should get some lovin' with brand new units, instead of korinth and athenaioi hoplites. Go enjoy your spartans!

    I thought I read that there are still hundreds of spots for more troops open just not in the custom battles ... so why remove anything from the campaign game that has been done already?

    We are about 50 models away from the limit, and just over 100 more unit spaces. To have hoplites from a particular city, you need to have a spare merc slot on an existing model, or have an entirely new model altogether. There are better things to do with our precious models.

    It is funny to think that with the move to MTW2, we won't have a problem with models, but it will be units that we run low on.

    500 units, but the model limit has not been reached yet, its at least 800. This is because MTW2 uses different models for the armour upgrades so CA had to increase the model cap, but EB won't be doing that. This allows for one model per unit, with lots of lovely left-overs for generals, captains, standard bearers and mounts.

    Just some brainstorming: it would be pretty nifty if you could use that feature, combine it with scripts and have lower-end soldiers improve their war gear through loot.

    What? Entire units. As far as I am aware armies did not equip themselves with the spoils of war, individuals might perhaps take a sword or belt, but I doubt that units would scout the battle for better armour. Besides, any armour they did pick up off a dead enemy would most likely have some rather large holes in it - such is war.

    Hannibal did make his Africans and Spaniards to collect the chainmails of the dead Romans. ;)

    But I think its too difficult to do that.

    I would love to see, but dont know if this is possible with M2TW ti see a Macedonian phalanx where different phalangites have different helmets (Thracian, Chalkidian, Thracian with facemask, etc) just like in the movie Alexander.

    Now that we are going to do. Different helmets, different shields, different armour, different faces. No worries there.

    What I think would be even better is the use of blacksmiths for a similiar purpose. For example the Polybius Reform actually seems to do very little to change the composition of the Roman army it is actually just a different skin with slightly upgraded attack and defense ... and I hate that I have to lose my veteran units for that upgrade (sorry I get really attached to units ... every bit as much as favorite generals) ... so now we could do that upgrade through 'technology' of the blacksmith ... maybe make the particular blacksmith available through a script to keep in a certain time frame.

    We are unsure how we will do the reforms just yet, but that certainly is an option, but that would mean that the blacksmith upgrades would be restricted to one faction (the romans) only, which is certainly not what we want. There may of course be other triggers that have the same effect, we just don't know at this point.

    Actually it would up-armor any factions units possibly as well ... keeping it balanced. A Gallic warband could for example get some leather armor or even mail etc. and better quality swords or spears etc.

    The libyans for example have units that look the same but at first they start with linnen armor later we face them with mail armor ... I am sure this could work with just about any faction.

    But it will keep it balanced ...

    I'm not sure how it works exactly, but I assume that a blacksmith in a region allows all units there to be equipped (and thus have it on their models) with better armour. However let us say we have it for the gauls and the romans, and the gauls reform comes first, then if the romans conquer a gaulish province then they get the reform before the polybian reforms actually happen. Unless I'm misunderstanding you.

    And as I've already said, I believe the current consensus is not to use the extra models we have for armour upgrades, which is what you are suggesting above. I can understand it for the polybian reforms, but having it across the board is not what we seek to do.
