I've always found your family declines and then booms, for example at one point I was down to about 5 generals (15 provinces) due to assassinations, low birth rate, inquisitions and all the usual stuff.

For the next 30 or 40 turns things steadily improved and then suddenly everybody was having kids, every couple of turns 2 or 3 male children were born and a couple of females. The number of generals in my family constantly grew as so many were coming of age so I ended up with 24 generals for 25 provinces. By the looks of things i'm going to end up with alot lot more and many still need to come of age.

These fluctuations were apparent in RTW and are just the same in M2TW, a declining family suddenly booms for no apparent reason.
