Pahlava bodyguards = run and hide!

Oh, my god they are the equivalent of modern tanks! I have noticed that although only in 270, they seem to be "late pahlava bodyguards" which may suggest "early bodyguards" should be there instead! Hmm, they tear through my bactrians like through paper and they seem to have the amazing AP attribute! They are unstoppable! The late version of them is supposed to be there from the beginning of the game?

I think that all starting generals begin with a Persian bodyguard yet all generals that are born after the the start receive an almighty, an epic and a great late Parthian bodyguard. I'm not sure if it's a bug or not however, you will have to check with the EB techo-people to be sure.

May I suggest that the best tactic to use against them is a solid mass of phalanxes in the main line and cavalry and spearmen on the flanks. Try preventing them from coming to kill your flanks by tricking them. Make a solid line of phalanxes in the centre and make one flank look really weak and another really strong with your spearmen and cavalry. They will go for your weak flank to come behind. Instantly send your men to the other flank as fast as possible to hold the evil creatures off. They should be dissuaded by this flank defense and should be forced into your phalanxes causing them to suffer destruction - that is, if the phalanx is strong enough. The best type to use for this task is the medium phalanx which should have the capabilities to keep those cursed guards in front of their spears!

It's not abug, it's a feature
The early Bodyguard is still under constuktion but the late was ready, so they are currently serving as aplaceholder.

As Bonny points out, this is only a temporary state of affairs while we finish the correct general unit. I wouldn't call it a bug, though. Some other elements of Pahlava are also unfinished, so their power as a faction is less than it should be. Thus, for now, the grivpanvar general units serve as something of a balancing mechanism.

These guys are indeed powerful. I had two of them attack 6 merc pezhetiroi. They went through the line and slaughtered them. When the battle was over I combined all of the remaining retreaters, I had almost two groups left...

I just fought an epic battle against Parthia (actually brought a veteran legion to the fight) just in order to kill one Parthian general (Zoroaster). It cost me a good many good Roman lives to kill his body gaurd and in the end, surrounded by 2000 Romans, he slowly pushed his way out all alone and fleed the battle. Not really the fault of the unit, but he must have had 5 dozen hitpoints. I did, however kill the two accompanying general, one was his son I think, along with about 600 cataphracts.

Yea, the Pahlava bodygaurds are tough to beat, even my Saka cataphracts have troubles with them.

What happened to the Saka bodygaurd unit? In .81 they have the cataphracts, and any new FM's also have the cataphracts instead of the Late bodygaurd.

C'mon guys ,they are not that poweful. You guys want to screw everything up with your legione or phalanxes. I had a Pahlava campaign and it is so hard. Fighting against different kinds of selukid & Ptolemoi and Bakterian phalanx and heavy infantry just with few Horse archers and some foot archers and your only hope is your general bodygourds. Well it was challenging to do this Campaign ,But without those Bodygourd units ,It could be even harder(Nearly impossible).

Horse archers and cataphracts are tough, but I like that. Historically the Romans got trounced every time the arogantly went up against Parthia. Those tough guys help to reproduce that. I remember one battle where they actually fought like they should have. Their horse archers rained down arrows and never let me engadge them. Then when they ran out of ammunition, they attacked with their cataphracts. I won, barely, a pyrrhic victory.

The Grivpanvar are meant to represent the finest of units mustered by the Iranians, and the Hye Sparapet of the Armenians reflects this as well. They are meant to be the best of the best, as the Pahlavân will lack infantry of true worth (As the best of the Pahlavân infantry will be the Pantodapoi phalangites - Pahlavân skin, the Arteshtar/Cardaces, a hoplite'esque infantry and the Verkhana Kofyaren, or Hyrcanians, the precursor to the later Sassanid elite Dailamite infantry). As the horse archers will do most of the killing, the Pahlavân will also need a unit which can provide a decisive punch. Against steady Roman and Hellenic infantry, in which the latter can provide decent cavalry, there is not only a need for an elite cavalry that can beat most other cavalry, but an anchor which can take a tremendous beating. They also work as a decoy against archers and skirmishers.

As of now the Sahigan Pahr are merely placeholders. As featured in the Art section, the Early Parthian bodyguard will be the Spahbade Pahlavanig.Their equipment is earlier and they are not quite as well armoured as the Grivpanvar/Sahigan Pahr, but will still prove to be one of the steadiest cavalry units early on along with the Zradha Pahlavan.

Grinpanvar are great, i love them especially when after the charge they bring their swords and start to slash left and right... but under their armour covered face they cant feel the pleasure to smoke a good no-filter gitane after have sent a guy to the afterlife...
