Here is a list of all the graphics cards ever made, the best being at the top and going down from there. I will just link to the forum that has this info since it is constantly updated, but this should definately help out some people when seeing if an upgrade is worth it.

I would think he really meant it honestly. I mean, even I() think it can be helpful because I have no idea about older ATI cards and how they rank compared to newer ones etc.
It's a good list if you just want to have a quick look without browsing for thousands of benchmarks etc.

On the down side it really puts my ancient card, compared to others on that list almost an antique, into perspective - compared to other cards it's really super low, even lower that the higher models of the Geforce Two seiries

As for the 7800GS smoking the 7600GS, it is very true, but the cost of a 7800GS is ~ $200 more or less and for the same price you can get a x1950Pro which will wipe the floor with the 7800GS, so the best bang for the buck at that price range for AGP is easily the x1950Pro. I own one and I must say, the are excellent cards. It is rumored though that there will be a x1950xt AGP version soon, which will easily outclass the x1950pro. So for all of those AGPers out there, it might be worth the wait for the x1950xt AGP instead of the x1950Pro, but it all depends on what you are going to upgrade from.

Each month Toms Hardware does a best video cards for the money. I don't know if you guys like Toms Hardware, but I'm not partial to any site and they seem to have really good info on such topics.

Page 7 has a chart also, but it doesn't include nearly as many as the first post.

It is rumored though that there will be a x1950xt AGP version soon, which will easily outclass the x1950pro. So for all of those AGPers out there, it might be worth the wait for the x1950xt AGP instead of the x1950Pro, but it all depends on what you are going to upgrade from.

I'm going to look into that. I can't afford a new CPU+MB+video card right now, but I could afford the X1950XT if I got a decent price for my 7800GS. And if I can ever find an AMD64-3700+CPU which would fit my present MB, I'd have a mighty hot AGP setup to last me through the summer months while I build up my PCI-E bank account. When I do go PCI-E, I'm doing it in a serious way. Da Mega-Rig!

As far as AGP goes, those charts consistently show the 7800 to be the better card.

That comparison only allows you to select the 7800GS+, which will beat the 7600GT, but is substantially more expensive. The vanilla 7800GS isn't on there.

That's the thing... if you're not into it as much as you used to, it's damn hard to quickly gauge cards' strengths and speeds etc. SM3.0, HAH!

Yes but as BKS said, it is the 7800GS+, which is basically a 7900GT slapped on an AGP board, which makes it significantly more powerful. Still though, at this time, for the price, an x1950Pro is the best bang for the buck.

Hmmmm, I have an inquiring question about that. Isn't SM3.0 faster than previous ones, therefore even if the X1600Pro is slightly slower than the X800, it wouldn't matter if the game is properly using SM3.0?

Shader models aren't to do with speed, per se, but with the effects that can be generated. So with SM 3.0 you might be able to get prettier water and better lighting, but your card will be slower overall-indeed, it might not be able to handle the improved effects.

BKS nailed it on the head. Shader Models aren't measured in speed but rather all the fancy shading effects and whatnot they can do. Ahh I can't wait for the day when I can afford a 8800.

As mentioned earlier, the 8800 will blow away a 7900 anyday for just about the same price. Always make sure to research the latest and greatest and then compare prices to an older series/model and then check the price vs performance to see if it is worth the extra $$ to get the latest and greatest. Anymore it seems that if you can afford the extra $50 or whatever it maybe it is a huge difference in performance for just $50. Obviously there are lots of variables, but for the sake of argument, this is mostly true, albeit, after a few months and the initial prices have lowered.

I have another question, though: is there a sort of typical standardized way how they innovate video cards? For instance, with ATI it's always been something like the 7000 series, then 8000, etc., then X, etc.
Obviously my X1600 choice was a bad one compared to my X800 regarding speed, though I can play newer games. So basically the 800 and higher in an ATI series are among the best, ALWAYS? Just making sure, so whenever I see an ATI with the X-something-whatever number I roughly know what it is

I'm looking at upgrading my PC at the moment. Trying to decide between the 8800GTS and the 8800GTX. I'll be playing games at 1600 x 1050 so by my research the GTX might be worth the extra pounds as it gives a 20 odd fps increase over the GTS.

What do people here think? Am I right to the spend the extra cash, the money isn't an issue.

I went with the 7950GT last year and one of the reasons was that 340EUR energy bill(I'm a student, so that is a lot for me) that scared me a bit and made me want to buy a card that does not use insane amounts of energy.
Apart from that, the 320MB version of the GTS was not announced yet.
Maybe the next generation of DX10 cards has some appeal, maybe less power consuption, though I doubt that.

I meant when I bought my card. I might have bought the 8800GTS 320Mb otherwise. Now I'm going to wait what future generation cards will bring that is worth buying a new card.

If money isn't an issue definately get the GTX. Always buy the best that you can with the money that you have. No reason to skimp out and then regret it later. You will definately want the extra horsepower when doing some higher rez gaming.

There is no 512MB version of the GTS. There is a 320MB version(recently released) and there is the 640MB version. Right now if you are thinking about getting a 7900 series card it would be way better to get a GTS 320MB because not only do you have DX10 capability but it will beat any other card at DX9, besides it bigger brothers of course.

I am not sure how they come up with the naming conventions for their cards. I will do some more research and see what I come up with. Also, really no need to worry about the naming conventions, guys like me will always be around to help you out as to what is the best bang for your buck.
