    Default Is it safe?

    Apologies to John Schlesinger.

    Is this hard or what?

Chancellor Gordon Brown has allowed a dentist to drill through to deep nerve tissue beneath his teeth without using an anaesthetic.

Mr Brown made the apparently painful decision because he did not want his mouth to freeze up just hours before he was due to deliver a speech.

The root canal work was carried out by Mervyn Druain of Belsize Park, London.

He told The Sun newspaper that Mr Brown had been "perfectly relaxed" and "did not flinch or grimace at any stage".

    Or is it just spin?

My bet is he cried like a baby. I've had root canal work and it hurts even with a local. Maybe I'm just a wuss.

If he didn't weep he can absolutely not count on not having my vote positively not.

    I hope that's clear.
There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

I'm afraid after watching a TV programme on politician's body language and being mortified by Gordon Brown's freaky joyless two second smiles grimaces, I can quite believe it. In fact, I could believe it even more if he were a John Schlesinger-style dentist doing the drilling for kicks. He just isn't normal - probably a pod person or something.

Let's just be clear, InsaneApache: that kind of machismo endears you to a politician? I can just imagine Brown and McCain running the show - it would make Iraq War II look like a boy's scout outing.

as for me, iv been in some pretty scary places and been in the dicey shite, and i would do any of it again then go to the dentist, it is my only fear, and it makes me shake, sweat and wobble like non other.. not only do i get the injects i take the gas as well, along with my mp3 player....

I'm reasonably rational about most risks in my life - but I'm totally with you on the dental thing. I can't explain it, and have given up trying to. I only go as a last resort.

you´re forgetting one very simple fact.

politicians aren´t human beings like you and me....normal biology and pain thresholds don´t apply

I have no fear of dentists. I've never even had so much as a filling put in. I have perfect dental health. Unless of course that changes when I next see the dentist in 2 months.

I think that the guy would surely have at least grimaced.
