Well it sounds like he said he merged all 3 trained units into a full and underpowered stack, so logically they should have retained their training bonuses. Wonder if anyone else, maybe Carl or sapster, knows if this is a verified bug?

Sorry If I wasn't clear in my earlier post.
I have 3 JHI units, all of them of the same experience level (2 bronze chevrons)
Number of men per unit card before battle like so:
90/90 90/90 90/90
After combat:
65/90 67/90 64/90
I merge them like so:
90/90 90/90 16/90
That's when the sword icon disappears.
JCoyote's explanation sounds plausible, but the funny thing is, all of the men in these units have the upgrades. So logically they should retain the upgrade after the merger? I had not retrained any of them yet, so there was no addition of green unupgraded troops.
The whole merging process has got to be bugged. You can swap men back and forth and see some real oddities with experience, so not surprised they turn up with other upgrades too.
I don't ever see unit that were merged to make a full unit, where the base was upgraded and the replacements were not, show up as ungradable. And if the per man upgrade is being retained, and not some average for the unit (or even in that case!), I would expect to see a partial upgrade cost.
I think it's bugged.
Arcturion is right.... I think its a bug. I just saw same same with a couple of stacks of Danish Axe. When all units being combined have weapon bonus' the merger doesn't work right it seems.
I have ssen this work correctly with experience and armor but not weapons.
So how do we submit this and what type of evidence do we need?

This definitely sounds like a bug; so now the question is whether it's a display bug (ie the bonus is still there) or an engine bug (ie the bonus dissapears).
I'm hoping for the former, but have no way of knowing.

I have seen this with armour and could not upgrade to the correct shield again unless the units were partially depleted and I retrained.
I have seen cases where I had bronze and silver shields in a a number of groups -- 6 or so -- and merged them together and then had say 3 silver and 3 bronze. When I closed stack and reopened it, all 6 stacks were bronze.
