Eh, maybe. The current crop of Republicans are less than inspiring- so I'd certainly be willing to take a serious look at another possibility. The guy should have good practice dealing with the media at least.

Looking at the rest of the field, the presidency would probably kill McCain, G-Man would probably kill the party...he looks like he could prove the eventual man who gets to beat Hillary.

Bright, reasonably conservative, plays the Washington game well.
Not in the race yet, not raising money yet, so probably too far behind to make a run for it, regardless of quality.
Basically, for the GOP its a choice among:
McCain, Guliani, Romney, & Huckabee [Ark Gov].
For the Democrats its:
Hilary, Obama, Richardson, Edwards (outside shot of Gore, as he's the only one who could raise the money needed in a shorter time frame).
Almost anyone else is out of it on money raising issues. Sadly, we have a narrow field for both parties 11 months before the first primary. The presidency is now a 30-36 month in advance contest.

True SF, however in a field as lacking as this, do you think it reasonable that a late comer could make a show of it, given the speed and ability to raise funding for a particularly attractive candidate?

The money issue is crucial in the new campaign atmosphere. We're talking about the ability to raise 40-50M between now and 1 January '08. That's tough, even for seriously effective money machines like the Clinton team, but that's what folks are estimating will be necessary. Moreover, you need gropund teams up, running and with most of the kinks knocked out by 1 September this year in any state with a Primary date before St. Pat's.Originally Posted by ShadeHonestus
Remember, with the various states clamoring for February primary dates, a nominee decided by the end of February '08 is seeming like a real possibility and a virtual certainty by mid March -- that means oodles of ads etc. from Jan 2 on and teams up and running way earlier than typical of past elections.

Just talked with a friend of mine who works with the RNC. His opinion is much in line with yours, however he thinks he could still toss his hat in the ring. Oddly enough he thinks we could see a situation like that in '76 and '80 in parallel with Reagen's ascension.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.
