Default I want, and I'm only going to say it once,

    More Hornblower.

Awesome, it's Harry Potter with ships. Such a man of great character, so noble, so brave, you want to be him. You want him to be your dad your son your friend. I love series like this, great action, great story and shameless heroism. Why always the french or the spanish in english naval-movies, why never the naval spanking we gave them, everybody forgets us. Anyway, I want more. And if you would be so kind to recommend some more goodness it would be apreciated. I know of Sharpe. What else is there.

Because he who spanks last spanks longest my friend.

Its not a film but I can recommend "Cochrane: The Life and Exploits of a Fighting Captain" http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cochrane-Lif...3869619&sr=1-8

Its real life Hornblower. Mind boggling.

Also have you tried Patrick O'Brian's novels about Jack Aubrey ? Same sort of stuff.

A TV series at it's best. I vaguely remember reading a few of the books (by C. S. Forester) when I was a wee lad. The most memorable episode in the TV series, IMHO, was the one with the mad captain, that kept sending the boy below for a flogging . Eventually it got almost comical. "Take him below!" and "20 Lashes I think Mr <whatever his name was>!" I remember just waiting for it to happen, and yep sure enough here we go again, then when it came to something like the fifth time(!), I was wondering if the whole thing wasn't some kind of a joke. Priceless though.

Sharpe was great. Always missed Hornblower when it was on, though.

I second this recommendation, Cochrane was quite a bloke. Seeing as it's his memoir, it's probably embellished a bit, but it's still great reading.

Ah, Cochrane. He commanded my North American Station to crushing victoray against the US Navy, sinking the entire Fleet, on Vicky. But that is by the by.

Hornblower used to run on the BBC at lunchtimes. I would enjoy coming home for a lunch (especially if I had no class immediately after lunch) and watching it. I was tempted to crack out the Navy Rum in celebration...

Dont know of hornblower, but Richard Sharpe was awsome. I remember reading the last pages of one of the books, getting to the last words "So he will march again" and thinking it was so badass.

The Hornblower and Aubrey characters were based on the real life Cochrane. If you're into Napoleonic era Naval Warfare, these series of books can't be beat.

I almost got away with giving my son the middle name of Horatio...almost. After choosing the first name I gave her the options of Byron and Horatio for the middle, let her feel involved since I did all the hard work.

    Alexander Horatio
    Alexander Byron

I personally think Horatio Alexander would have been catchy, but I was vetoed.

    I like Byron, sounds regal.

I didn't like Patrick O'Brien. Maybe he is an acquired taste, I dunno. I have yet to try Horatio Hornblower, so I think I'll give that a whack.

The O'brien books had far more historical detail...too much for my taste. The hornblower focused more on the storyline.

@Honestus: Didn't Horatio hate his name in the books? :p

I wonder what happens when he's gonna find out if he's been named after a popular novel character.
