There was the time I went on a big wide loop and 'executed' most of the other team, who weren't expecting someone turning up behind them. Nothing quite like whispering 'surrender?' in someone's ear whilst simultaneously touching a cold gun barrel to the back of their neck. Usual response is to panic, turn round and try to shoot at me. Which means I get to shoot them.

I shouldn't be such an evil bugger when I play, but it's just too hard to resist, and if the other team doesn't have any decent flank protection, it's their own damned fault.

I ref'd a tournament at a buddy's paintball field a few back. Maybe eight or ten teams. Big BBQ after, great stuff.

One team showed up wearing mostly jeans and white t-shirts, I kid you not. They called themselves the Quebec Army. Riiiiiight. Well, my buddy thought they looked so impressive he put them against The Nasty Boys, a team of native guys from the reserve who were decked out to the nines in camo and had every paintball weapon you could imagine, including smoke bombs and paint grenades. I'd never seen a paint grenade before. Very neat.

So, I'm ref-ing the Quebec Army end of things, bright orange vest and face mask, and I get a first hand view of the slaughter. The Nasty Boys cleaned out all but one of the Quebec Army in short and painful order then set after the last poor shmuck who was lying flat on the ground behind a dead tree, terrified, trying to hide. The Nasty Boys formed a skirmish line, and advanced while tossing a smoke bomb or two just for fun, and hurling abuse. I'm just standing there, twenty feet from him, not giving away his position, but able to see him shaking like a leaf.

Honestly, I can't remember how it ended, but I'll never forget the look of that guy lying there frightened to death, like a scared puppy cowering in the corner with eight vets coming towards him all carrying semi-auto needles for the Big Sleep.

Nah, we get 400 Paintballs to use in the day as part of the payment, but they give it to us when we get there. Though that does sound very nasty.

Assuming it stayed frozen and didn't jam the gun with condensation, I think that would earn you a ferocious beating by all hands involved.

i remember the first time i played, we were playing king of the hill, and my team had the hill. had a big log in front of me that i was using for cover and shooting at the enemy that were slowly advancing forward about 20 feet away. after ducking behind the log to reload i pop my head back up to see their scout with her weapon pointed 6 inches from my head. scared the bejeezus out of me. i almost soiled my pants, almost had a heart attack right there. so i of course quickly surrender after she tells me to. then she rubs it in by showing me that she was out of bullets. it was awesome.

    PSP World Cup 2006

The tall lad, behind the screen at right, is my 15 year old nephew Tyler. He refereed at the PSP World Cup 2006 in Texas last year. He's an avid paintballer himself.

I tried paintball awhile back, maybe 10-15 years ago, with some friends from work. We played at an outdoor wooded course, it reminded me of playing army when I was a kid. Only there wasn't any "you missed me nyah nyah nyah". We wore no protection other than goggles, and you knew you hit because most of the time it stung bad enough to make you yelp, howl, curse... I took one right in the mouth, split my lip, and was spitting blood and paint for awhile. Took a few beers to wash out the paint and ease the pain.

That's funny, in 12 hours meaning sunday noon I'm going paintballing. Im doing it with my class in university, should be fun.

I've never actually paintballed before, however I've done my share of hardballing, shooting BBs. I've got an electrical rifle SIG 552 SWAT, I love the way changing clips is fast with the SIG.

So my experience will probably come in handy.

    Good luck to you!

    That´s all?

    (JK)

I´ve only been hit a few times, the game usually ends before I´m hit, but the last one I had was on my arm. I had a circle on my upper right arm that didn´t go away for two weeks.

A couple of months ago me and some friends were paintballing out in the desert, there were only four of us, so it was two on two. My teammate was kneeling next to me loading his hopper and when he stood up he accidentaly pulled the trigger, and started shooting balls all over the place. One hit the inside of my elbow, and all I was wearing was a thin jacket. Needless to say it hurt. I still have scar on my arm from the incident .

I went paintballing for the first time last summer. I organized an outing for my son and his friends. I think there were 11 of us in all. The most surprising thing in my experience was the adrenaline rush that came with each game. What a thrill! It was more fun than I anticipated - and I was expecting to have a lot of fun.

The professionally run field we went to was very strict on the safety regulations. A gun barrel pressed to the back of the neck a-la Somebody Else would have gotten that person tossed off the field for the rest of that day with no refund. No shooting anyone with 10 feet (3 meters) except in the "castle" and there you were to aim for the legs only.

In our group, the majority of us had never played before. We had a good time taking on another group of teenagers that was there. Then the refs mixed up the two teams for the rest of the day, which was a good move. There was much good natured verbal sparring before and after each match between the friends. The only negative was when the ref put our two teams of teenagers (and a few geriatric warriors) up against a large group of 20-30 somethings (age group) that obviously had been doing paintball for a long time and had their own equipment...most of us had to rent. We suspected that this older team had the gas pressure in their markers jacked up higher than what the field regulation allowed. One of our guys had his paintball hopper punctured by a paintball! Anyway, revenge was ours when we kicked their camo-butts real bad in the second game.

I'm curious CountArach, how long did your 400 paintballs last? Most of our teenagers were coming up dry after about 3 matches and they started with 500 paintballs. Me and the other dad had to go buy another box of 2000 (very overpriced) paintballs for the rest of the day. It was amazing watching these young Rambos in action. In many of the matches, our teams are far enough apart in the woods that we could barely see each other (if at all), yet when the ref yelled "go", I could immediately hear paintballs being fired. Regarding the ammo situation, the funniest moment of the day was when 5 of our kids where huddled up - read "pinned down" - in a wooden helicopter. Three of the kids were out of paintballs, another was down to his last couple of shots and the last kid had about 10 left. The other team just kept our guys occupied while one of them went around the helicopter and captured our flag. It was hysterical listening to these kids describe their pathetic situation afterwards. Of course, I, um, was eliminated early from that match by a lucky shot (aren't they all?) otherwise I'd have been there to help them.

I used 200 in the first 10 minutes :P, just to get a feel for the game. I ended up using 600 over the next 3 hours, just being more conservative.

Ahh paintball... if only I had time to play it like I used to. I think the coolest thing about paintball is when you have one coming straight at your face and its all slow motion like... you can see it coming real slow, almost like time slows down and then SPLAT... orange all over your face mask, at which you curse because the paint is no fun to clean out of your mask. At any rate, make sure your so called "friends" don't cheat and turn the pressure up on their guns after everyone sets them to be equal...

I personally like to play as the sniper, so hearing how many balls you guys burn through is jaw dropping, lol. BTW CA, sounds like you got owned. That's a lot of times to be hit, then again, it depends on where you played too. I have only been shot roughly 30 times in 3 years, not counting the time I shot myself in the foot... yeah...don't ask. Anyway, play paintball as much as possible, arguably some of the most fun you can ever have.

Well it was 15 on 15 with 10 minute rounds. Very often I could not avoid it. Trust me, if I could avoid being hit, I tried.

And I gave at least as good as I got.

15 on 15 in a 10 min round... holy crap. No wonder... thats like a blood bath right there!

I'm more used to a slower paced game. Like 10 on 10 in a medium sized area with lots of different typed of terrain. Hills, streams, trees, fields. Lots of stuff. Special forces type of thing too. Lots of sneaking around, blending in with your surroundings type of deal. Got to love it. That and sniping some guy crossing an open area is just the best.

I burn through about 200 rounds per match some times, it's all about supression.

It's not really fair as I usually play with amateurs who just run off and try to Rambo, then there's me in a ditch cammed up and perfectly still.

Suddenly 20 balls hit someone in the chest and he falls over twitching, fantastic.

I did get shot in the sole of the boot once, that really irritated me. I didn't even fell it.

I must hasten to add that I don't actually shoot people point blank when given the option - that's just rude. And anyway, getting them to surrender means I get to spend more money on alcohol afterwards. I prefer to use, at most, about 50 paintballs per 10 minute round. If they do turn around to try and shoot at me, that's when I jump back a few yards and dose them.

Manoeuvering until I can get a clear shot is more my thing, none of this hosing down an area, hoping for a lucky hit.

That would be ideal Tribesman, but that isn't possible at any of the dozen or so paintball field that I checked out prior to picking the one I did. Every field requires that you buy and use their paint and in most cases that means paying inflated prices. I guess that is where the fields make most of their money. Every now and then some of the fields will have special "bring your own paint" days, but that is the except around here.

At the course that I go to there is a little snake on one side. One game I crawled on the outside of the snake and got behind a bunker. It turned out the other team was advancing foreward fast enough that I got behind them. I knocked a few out without them realizing where I was, but then I saw one with the back of head facing me. Let me tell you, I was so eager. I stood straight up aimed at the back of his head (which is the only real part unprotected) and just let fly. I hit him at least 3-6 times before he fell down holding his head.

Then I jumped back down on the snake and crawled back, firing all the way.

    It was fuuuuun man.

    Ah paintball... good memories...

Hiding in a tall field... friends walk right by me talking... *click* one of them says "what was that?" I open up fully automatic and hit each at least 15 times.

Getting hit in the head and neck from 5 feet away...

Being the last one left, and shotting 5 people before finally getting shot in the face...

Showing off my battle wounds to the girl's gym class when we were playing soccer the next day outside...

    To many good memories...

I had a crappy... can't remember the the gun's name, and I later got a Dye Impulse which I upgraded to the max. It was fun when I use to play.
