I used England for my first campaign. They have a really solid starting point. You can pretty much take over all of England and Ireland without really being bothered. Once you have that solid kingdom you can easily move on to face the French and HRE.

The tutorial is a good place to start...

After that, a short campaign as the english is a good way to go. They are probably the easiest of the starting factions...

Yep, just play around and get to know everything in your first campaign and after you learned from your mistakes, start a new one and try to implement new strategies, expand better, ect...

Greetings, King of Kings and Lord of Lords!! I'm Indy, and I found France the easiest to play. My apologies to the English camp over there!!! Anyway, I might suggest you sign your Princess up to your diplomatic core for methinks that your would be trade and alliance partners would like to see her faster than they would like to see a man.

Secondly, make sure you have one diplomat in the Vatican. That way, you can stay off Crusades and get busy with the day to day stuff like running your empire. I also strongly that you don't just stop at having perfect relations with the Papal States. I'd go one better and GET A STATUE IN YOUR IMAGE!!! Generations from now, people will look at that statue and say, "There was a man who loved his Pope!!!!" On the other hand, one must watch out for His Hatness' lack of geographical skills. I don't think he knows how far it is between the British Isles and Jerusalem!!!

The downside is that Milan and the HRE can be real pains in the bippy!!! Milan will stay neutral for only three turns and then they turn on you with all guns, I mean swords, blazing. Make sure your armies are huge and play by the numbers.

Last bit of advice here is that you get rid of any and all Rebel settlements ASAP!!!

I hope you have with this game. God knows I am!!!!

Live long and prosper, take care and thank you kindly!!!!

    Sincerely yours always,

    Indy.
