Default Can Catholic factions attack Crusading armies?

I have an army of Crusaders, and to get to the Target I need to send it through either the Holy Roman Empire or Milan, both of whom want to boil my brains alive. I noticed that I could not attack the Milanese because they are Catholic, is this favour returned?

They can't attack you unless they've been excommunicated, AFAIK.

Yes, this is very handy when a faction is at war with you and has ships in the way of your crusading sea route. You just sail past and wave!

I do believe that you could attack Catholic factions even if you are on a crusade to a non catholic target

Catholic armies can attack a crusade stack, but doing so means excommunication AND completely screws relations with other catholic factions. So the AI ignore the crusade 99% of the time.

The only time I've seen the AI attack a crusade, was a danish crusade of 1 general marching through HRE lands....
Still maintain that crying on the pitch should warrant a 3 match ban

My problem is that I'VE had one of my cities attacked by a Danish Crusader Army while playing as Poland!!! Go figure. Also, I've seen several British Crusader armies hanging around a French town - not moving for many turns - and NOT suffering a loss of troops for not progressing to the target of the Crusade!! I sense some inconsistencies within the AI.

iirc, the AI doesn't suffer desertion penalties

AI catholic factions don't have to attack crusading armies to cause problems - they can simply block the route of your crusading army - which if it detours may then suffer desertions.

Oh and don't you just love it when you go to land a crusading army outside Antioch and you can't because there's a merchant and an iman standing in the way.
