Because they're better ... and there's a more of them... and they exist like 300 years after the last sovereign Spartan state. Praetorians have better equipment and tactics.

If you don't believe me, you can always watch 300 until your brain melts from the testosterone overdose. :-p

The Praetorians slaughter hypaspists quite easily as well in the same settings. They lost 10% when I tested. I don't know about other elite foot units but I'm pretty sure the Praetorians will win with various levels of decisiveness. Part of this is due to the game, because at least concerning the hypaspists, the Praetorians had double the number. And the other part is that the Praetorians are several hundred years later and therefore able to receive expanded training and equipment than these units in the 3rd century B.C or even earlier.

Dont want I think the question can goes here easly.

Which one you think its the best unit (not your favorite) of infantry in the game?

I am between the Praetorians or one of the Argyraspidai Thorokitai?

Have your Hoplites spread so they can't be envoleped easely and in HOLD. They should be harder to kill.

    Does this include cost effectiveness?

really if you took a cohort of praetorian vs a unit of Spartans from history
put them together i really think the Spartans would win, being trained as Soldiers from about 7 - Killing machines

Praetorians had the gear, yes but would they fight to the last man? i think not

    i'm really not sure

Well, 500 of them surrendered after everyone got sick of the Spartans and decided to kick them out of Attica. Thank the slingers for that one.
