I had a battle like that against the HRE. I had 4-5 units of cavalry, and they had many units of crossbows and a few dismounted feudal knights (or some other sword unit). Fortunately I didn't have to worry about having a bunch of long pointy sticks to deal with.
Ironically the HRE sent their crossbows in to get slaughtered first, followed up with their swords. I ended up avoiding the swords so I could take out their siege units, and then charged their swords from several directions.
Unfortunately my casualties were much higher...
Formed Charge effects aren't animation based strictly speaking, they just happen if the Cav in question hit somthing whilst charging, so this dosen't effect them, in any case I think that cav are unaffected even in normal fighting by it. They normally fight from a higher level than their ground based opponents anyway so they are barely effected.Thats is what i am talking.
