Nelson had some great qualities, but his record proves that he was a devil in a sea fight and pretty mediocre at the rest of the combined arms menu.
Nimitz handled the whole package pretty well -- even if he did put a DD in the mud once.

There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

I wouldn't say that, he fought several land actions in South America and the Mediterranean. He successfully stopped the French invasion of Naples, and had the fortitude to exceed his authority when the situation demanded it.Nelson had some great qualities, but his record proves that he was a devil in a sea fight and pretty mediocre at the rest of the combined arms menu.
He was a brilliant strategist.

Nelson of course! Nimitz was good, but most generals would have won under his conditions, only with different amounts of losses. Nelson won despite overwhelming odds and did so repeatedly, both a great tactician and an inspirational leader prepared to go first into battle even if it eventually meant his death.

Come off it, Nelson - no dispute.
He was an exptional tactition and a brave comander who triumphed against the odds on many occasions.
Nimitz was relatively speaking a nobody. nothing he did stands out in the same way and i expect he would be bloody embaressed to be mentioned in the same breath.

What!? Nimitz is the most important admiral ever. He single-handedly won the Pacific war for America, avenged the infamy of Pearl Harbor, and made the world save for democracy. The entire free world is deeply indebted to him. God bless him!
That old marauding pirate Horatio on the other hand only ever narrowly won a handful of naval skirmishes with the rearguards of unsuspecting fleets. The old bugger even deserted his men and country by drinking himself to death in panic after a wee bullet bounced off of his shoulder medals.

Let's face it Frenchie - Nelson stuffed your boys big time - but it is time to move on!!
As for Nimitz - living proof of he who has the most toys wins - even a French admiral could have won with that material advantage..... unless good ole Nelson came along of course!!!!
