Nazi Germany. That should do the trick.

Remember the unofficial rule of all gaming forums - don't mention nazi germany

For a change, maybe try a gallic or iberian faction?

    Pseudo-Ptolies

Or rather, Gaul, they are quite fun. If you find them too easy go for Dacia. Thrace can be interesting, same with the Greek Cities (for a short while atleast). Parthia if you can stand the hideous colour scheme.
We have this almost mythical tree, given to us by the otherwise hostile people in the east to symbolize our friendship and give us permission to send caravans through their lands. It could be said to symbolize the wealth and power of our great nation. Cut it down and make me a throne.

    Hi pockettank,
If you desire a challenge then Parthia, Armenia and Pontos are quite interesting to play as - the political situation in that region is impossible to control and you always end up struggling to finance your armies against the enemies attacks.

    Sythia
is also rather difficult with it's weak foot units, however, it does own almighty horse archers. It has to contend with many factions and will rarely ever get much further than it's starting provinces. However, it is in a very defendable position, over the river, from most of these more powerful factions. This enables you to defend yourself better against these assaults while you build up your armies!

Dacia and Thrace are also rather difficult. Thrace is in a very hard position surrounded by mighty and powerful factions which can easily take out it's humble starting provinces. Unless you beat Macedonia to Byzantium then very often you are doomed fighting multiple enemies on multiple fronts including powerful horse-archers from up-north! Dacia is also challenging for similar reasons. They often end up on the brunt of Roman, Greek and nomadic assault with their uncivilised unit roster - Barbarian units generally route faster.

If you wish for something slightly less challenging then you will enjoy playing as Gaul or Britannia - their barbarian troops are humble against Roman assaults so you require every ounce of tactics you can find to hold them and their posh armour off! Gaul is definitely the hardest of the two having to hold off the Romans straight away, while Britannia has time to build up and gain some decent units before facing the power of the Julii - that is, if the Germanic tribes don't kill your early hopes of expansion first!

Iberia is also quite hard, however, it's units are much more powerful compared to that of other Barbarians and, as long as Gaul and Carthage get off your peninsula, survival is rather easy due to your defendable position, the Northern mountain ranges, that is till Rome comes along!

If you want something slightly easier then you will enjoy playing as The Seleucid Empire. They are wealthy and, if you play defensive, have a good chance in the world with their wide variety of long speared phalanx units against their neighbours' weak light infantry. The Seleucid's weakness is, however, their neighbour's amazingly powerful missile cavalry which easily hold back your phalanxes tiny shields.

If you wish to play as one of the less challenging challenge then you may enjoy having a go at playing with the Greek Cities. They have high quality "standard" phalanxes, however Macedonia possesses phalanxes with much longer pikes - this makes the early game hard, yet once you are past the Macedonians it's plain sailing.

Germania is quite a challenge in later expansion. However early expansion is very easy due to their Spear Warband's immortal phalanx formation which other Barbarian Tribes simply cannot match with any units. However, later expansion is much more of a challenge, late Roman infantry and Greek phalanxes are generally superior to most mainline Germanic units with a few great exceptions. However, this difficulty is easily removed through the use of berserker units - I have seen two units of those almighty heroes cut up a full stack army of legionaries before.

The other factions are generally easy - Egypt can easy go steamroller across the Selucids' feeble militia phalanxes with their superior units, Macedonia's long pikes and almighty cavalry can easily hold off most foes enabling you to flank them, while the Roman factions simply are immortal with their brilliant late game legions.

    Hope this helps you, cheers!

Download Europa Barbarorum, all of their factions are historical, unique, and challenging. It will be much different than anything you experienced in Vanilla.

Yeah, download EB, or try the Gauls. They can be pretty tricky to play as, with the Julii constantly breathing down their necks.
