Truth be told I'd personally prefer an "officially approved" take on the matter if only for the sake of unit balance (which I have neither the time nor the interest nor the know-how to even try to keep an eye on), but I can also well understand why the team has more pressing matters to attend to. Thankfully most of the unit descriptions are so rich in detail and information they make do-it-yourself modification reasonably 'safe' and painless if a little time-consuming.

I have only one problem with trying EDU files with BI abilities, i believe it totally screws up the balance, and in order to keep the units balanced, the person who makes them, would have to change other stuff like attack and defence,
For example berserk gaesatae or shield wall hoplites seem too powerful because the EB team made them without the abilities to work like they were raging warriors or "shield wall" infantry. The BI abilities just push that over the top.
Am I right in my assumption or wrong?
EDIT: seems like Watchman has the same concern...

All I've used was "ca_swim" and "shieldwall" really (plus adding the "warcry" to some units - I figure that does the "frothing mass aggression" thing sufficiently well, and "berserk" would be overkill), but I'll readily admit some of the stunts I've seen shieldwalled units pull slightly worry me. It doesn't help I had hardware trouble before I had the time to play much with them to form any sort of solid opinion, and although that's now done with (and the comp a spaceship compared to the old box...) I've yet to muster the energy to re-modify the whole thing and start playing again.

I use BI.exe and an eddited EDU which still runs on Rome.exe with no problems.

@the imbalance I've noticed it to: 80 Cammilian Triarii in shield wall held off 1000 ceatrii and scuatri on a brirge with 1 loss. (And he wasn't realy in the shield wall to start with.

Whoa. I don't recall it being that good in BI.

OK, that is an anomaly, haha. A funny one though. I tried a similar thing vs. a Gallic horde and lost about half of my triarii. Over 800 Gallic casualties, although I also had archers and skirmishers launching missiles randomly into the crowd.

But that's bridge battles for you. They are always a cinch.

I've held an entire Eleutheroi steppe horde on a ford with just one bunch of those Pahlava bodyguard monsters. The other bunch of them hacked its way over the other ford and hit the whole clump in the rear...

The AI's issues with river battles are kinda notorious, I think.

Yes, shieldwall gives a huge defence bonus & totally destroys the intended balance unless you drop off the other stats in compensation & that requires a seperate EDU.
Also, EB have already set the formation spacing as they intend it to be, shieldwall puts the units even closer together (to the point the RTRPE hoplites are constantly 'treading water' to keep in position against the game engine algorythm to force too close units to spread out.

I'm happy with hoplites as they are in EB without shieldwall.
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...

    So don't use it.
