PBM is play by e-mail. It means one player starts a campaign as a ceratin faction, and the savegame is passed about other players so everyone gets to play a bit. 2 types:
1 When every player picks a general in game to role play. Player elect a leader every x years and that player is the one who actually does the playing for his time in office. However, whenever someones avatar general fights a battle, the save game is sent to that general and he fights the battle before sending the savegame back to the elected leader.
2 A One player starts the campaign and plays until the faction leader dies. Then he sends the savegame to someone else, who plays until the next leader dies.
B Same as above, but the players each play a set number of turns instead of the leader's life.

PS vorenus... you an HBO Rome Fan? I am also, shame they ended it. Though I did read that the lost 30 million dollars on it, what with paying to film in Italy and all the sets and costumes. shame
