Default For those who know the history of Charlemagne

I am not fluent in this period of European history. In terms of MTW2 what cities and castles represent his empire?

In response please list out the city names and castles as they appear in MTW2 if you could.

    thanks,

    Odin

Charlemagne's empire covered most of modern day France and extended somewhat north and east so it would be something like that :

Paris, Angers, Rennes, Bruges, Metz, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Dijon, Marseille, Stauffn and maybe even Nuremberg and Antwerp (not totally sure about those last two ones...)

Anyway that died somewhere after 900 so almost 200 years before the beginning of MTW2...so the center of power might change a lot...

Charlemagne'capital city was Aix-la-Chapelle (modern day Aachen in Germany) and should be somewhere betweem Metz and Stauffen and the city above (can't remember its name...)

It played more on the timescale of MTW:VI...

    Hope that helps...

Both posts helped a lot thanks fellas. So he did hold the realms of Burgandy and most of northen italy and germany so @Tristan de Castelreng is your list far enough to the west?

Based on the map provided it looks to encompass (in game terms) france (including bourdeaux) the cities of milan and all of the HRE possibly to prague?

Reason for my asking is after I complete my current hungarian campaign I thought I would attempt to recreate the Calogian empire (currently using the LTC mod) so I wanted to get some opinions of what others more educated of the period thought that might encompass in terms of settlements.

That map dates from 843. Charlemagne died in 814... I don't think it changed very much, but perhaps a little on the eastern border, and also the province in spain.

EDIT: 1814 was perhaps a bit too much for a human... Thanks Omisan :P

As of now I will probably use that map as my guide but we'll see, someone else might be concocting the same Role play for themselves and have made a list of the requsite settlements needed as they exsist in the game.

    I don't think he lived 971 years.

    So thus far I have:

    Paris
    Angers
    Rennes
    Bruges
    Metz
    Toulouse
    Bordeaux
    Dijon
    Marseille
    Stauffn

and maybe even Nuremberg and Antwerp

Anyone out there care to dispute or confirm this? Again its really just for my own personal role play purposes for a future campaign, but would love to get feedback from those who know the Charlemagne period.

Im surprised no Italian cities are on the list wasnt milan part of the kingdom of burgandy at the time?

After taking a look at my history books from elementary school (archeological fashion...)

I think that my memory failed me a bit...
I didn't remember the Carolingian Empire to be so vast but then to be divided in three and still be so powerful after his death, it truly had to be big...

Thus in you list you should add in MTW2 fashion :
    Caen (forgot that one)
    Zaragosa
    Milan
    Genoa
    Florence
    Venice
the Hungarian town east of Venice
    Rome
    Bern
    Nuremberg
The town to the east of Antwerp
    Antwerp (confirmed)
    Hamburg
    Aarhus
    Magdeburg
Some towns to the east of Nuremberg (can't remember those)

I think that should cover it...

There's also Bologna, right in the middle of the rest....

To be honest i was suspect on your initial list, only because it didnt include any northern italian cities and my own limited knowledge of the period I thought they should be in it.

I really do appreciate you taking the time to reply to this thread.

    No problem...
Tonight after work, i'll take a look in the osprey book I referenced in this thread in a earlier post...

It's real documented on the period on a wargame point of view, so if you need anymore info on that subject, just post in your thread (so others may use that info) or PM me...

I kinda like the period... Are gonna make a mod about this or do you just wanna roleplay a recreation of his empire in a campaign ?

Actually, i'm playing a french campaign and I've just considered that I've done just that except that i'm missing rome and some eastern provinces but have conquered some part of britain and the whole northern part of spain

    I'm the new flowery-beard conqueror...

I'd love for more discussion/input on this topic so if you get more by all means post it.

I do not plan on creating a mod, but I am planning a future French campaign with the intent of recreating Charlemagne's empire, I might do an AAR but I dont think so.

The main problem with re-enacting that period of history is that it ended 200 years before the start of the MTW2 campaign, so if you wish to play with historical accuracy, the highest knights you should get are mailed knights
not sure about Xbows, archers, spearmen and armoured sergents are OK but DFK are not, and you'll be missing some eastern style troops that served in Big Charles army (HA and light lancers mainly)

The main problem being that the AI will continue developing normally so after some time it will become quite a challenge....

Let me go through my info and I'll get back to you about what a Charlemagne campaign should be like...

And if you have any questions, ask away... I'll see what I can do...

I dont intend to play it historically persay, mainly just something like "Kings of France and the rebirth of an empire" You know using the MTW2 world, under the french crown to justify european conquest.

thought it might be a fun RP, I am mainly concerned with the areas of conquested needed to be able to proclaim that I have infact reconqured Charlemange's former empire.
