    Default Green Generals

How do I use this command? A detailed explanation would be much appreciated.

    Hi Kavhan,

right click your MTW:VI desktop shortcut (icon)
Click on "Properties" in the drop-down menu
You should see the exe command line, highlighted in dark blue, in the box marked "Target"

Change the line so it looks like this (the " marks must be present)

    Code:
    "C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval - Total War\Medieval_TW.exe" -strictserver -green_generals
Click 'Apply' or 'Okay' to come out of the dialogue.

    Start MTW using this icon.

I cannot vouch for how well campaigns-in-progress will respond to this change but they should be okay.

Normally in MTW/VI, when your general dies, he's replaced by a general with the exact same stats and traits. With the "green generals" activated, a general's successor will start with fewer command stars and lesser abilities. It makes for a more realistic game for the player, but it can also hamper the AI-controlled factions.

Aren't they the most jealous generals? You know, green with envy?
I believe in a society without rules, laws and regulations. A society where there are only ideas - strict ideas that must be followed to by the letter - and any failure to comply is punishable by death. This would be no dictatorship or police state, no one would be living in terror. It would merely be a 'reassessment of one's preferences,' people living in 'not-so-optimistic security.' So, welcome, those who are 'longing to be blindly obedient and loyal, unbeknownst to them.'

Actually, I think it's the generals trained by catholic factions in Irleand... (The protestants having red generals if I recall correct).

Caravel was just being "cute", as he is sometimes wont to do. He was simply referring to the fact that those factions mentioned (Italians, Turks, Irish, & Welsh) are green in color, both on the campaign map and in battle.

There is no faction that is forced to use green generals. They're only enabled if you choose to use them.

I played with the green generals a little bit and the effect of the command is somewhat limited - I only lose a star per general, meaning that if I start with a five star general, it is going to take a while until he drops down to three (and that assumes he gets no victories and command raising virtues in the meantime). I have married one to a princess to see if the marriage will carry over or not. All the vices and virtues change, and usually for the better.

You only lost one star with new generals? That's surprising -- I could've sworn a general's successor always lost at least two stars in the games I've played with green generals enabled. Perhaps they lose more stars if their predecessor had 7-9 stars?

On the other hand, it's been a long while since I've played with green generals, so it might just be early senility hitting me.

Actually, I think it's a ratio or percentage to how much command goes down, along with the other stats, if it's not erratic. I once had a rather low (but high command, I think 6-8 stars) general die. His successor was utterly loyal, but had only 4 stars. It's a theory, but it could be utterly of the mark.

I have not tested it for long enough, but I played with Venice in XL. I started with Bohemond de Tankerville, and when he died, his successor had only 1 star less (4 instead of 5), with only a light increase in lyalty. The loyalty however might have been tied to the 8 influence of my Doge at the time. I left him lingering in Milan, and the next general currently ahs 3 stars, and a nice loyalty of 6 or 7 (then again, my Doge's influence is 9 after a successful Crusade). There might be some negative correlation between command stars and loyalty, but I need to do more testing, play with other factions and see.

I think the higher loyalty of your "green" general is determined by the King's influence, the same way as a newly-trained unit would be and that the apparent inverse relationship of stars and loyalty is just an artefact of that.

Thanks very much EatYerGreens, very handy information!

From what I have seen with it turned on, I have had the generals I have received vary immensely compared to what statistics their former leader had. Sometimes it has been almost the same, a five star general's replacement being a four star, while other times it appears to have been completely different, an eight loyalty general being replaced by a four loyalty one. However, whatever statistics my new generals get compared to my old ones, they never seem to be higher in any field excluding loyalty, a four loyalty generals was replaced by a six loyalty one. However, I am unfortunate enough to have not done enough testing on that matter to be sure so my data may not be completely reliable.

My personal experience is of no changes (at least as far as command goes)

A factor that might be altering my results: since I am fond of starting games with Byzantium on High, I usually make one "assault general" by picking the ProKavTox/(Byzantine Cavalry) with the highest command and bestowing upon him the titles of "Commander of the Fleet" and "Duke of Trebizond", and use him as my main assault guy, whereas my defensive garrisons are commanded by Psiloi/(Trebizond Archers) with high acumen, and titles such as "Governor of Constantinople" or "Prince of Hungary". (I save the "Comes Stabuli" title, or however it´s called, for another assault general when I get enough cash to field two large combat armies). Thus, since I mostly keep my eyes on that dude and on the governors of "lots of cash" provinces, it might be that the four star bonus for the combat general and the acumen bonus that my governors get cloak the effects on their stats.

Or maybe granting an office maintains their stats stable?

Also: someone mentioned earlier that marrying your general makes him keep his traits. Is this so? I seem to recall the contrary.
