A Play By (e-)Mail.
Basically, players play through the same campaign, sending the save to the next player in line.
The Will of the Senate Pbm had players assigned to various roles (player A=character A, player B=character B), and on the Org forum the players discussed about what they should do. As far as I know, the WotS was the first Pbm (at least here) that had that system.
The Org forum for Pbms and AARs is the Throne Room.

I'd be interested, but you might want to wait until the next patch is out before starting it as there are a whole bunch of fixes and udpates that will be included in it.
