I like German expansion. If they get a good start they will do exceedingly well, whereas if they don't they will be stuck and die off easily. It's a nice difference from the always strong Romans/Ptolemies/AS/Carthage.
Here's an example from my current Rome campaign 217 (with some tweaking going on and complete isolation from myself. A.I script bonus is rather large to all factions).
I've been allied with them since 270 and they+Carthage+Arverni just declared war at once on me. Time for my campaign to really begin, or end!
