I was thinking of loading GR up again two days ago, but plumped for Vietcong for a shooter fix. GR is very unforgiving - it's all about seeing the enemy first and not fluffing that first shot. It means that when you know the map, you are relying on foreknowledge of the enemy's positions. Vietcong allows you to take a few hits and still keep coming, which allows for a more immersive experience (as you don't have to keep saving and reloading). Plus you get to see your gun.
GR did have some very nice missions though. I hated the timed ones, but the more free-form ones were engrossing. And the SP campaign is long and varied, with nice RPG elements in terms of upgrading your people's skills and guns.
I'm trying Stalker right now and in some ways it feels like a Morrowind/Ghost Recon hybrid.
