From experience, this did not happen in any of my MTW2 games...

I used it a lot in RTW but having tried it a number of times in MTW2 did not work.

On an patched H/H campaign, I remember one time being allied with the Moors and Spain being at war with the Moors... I sent a diplomat to ask for an alliance with Spain (I was engaging Portugal at the time). That alliance was gratefully accepted (with some under the table money from my part) because Spain was getting between the hammer and the anvil from Portugal and the Moors. That alliance did get a ceasefire between Spain and the Moors as I expected it should to form a front to smash the Portuguese.

And that is just one example... Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but having played TW from the first Shogun, I think I know how to handle diplomacy, even if it lacks a bit of depth...
