Thread: Effects of changing the resolution of texture files

Default Effects of changing the resolution of texture files

I was just going through the texture files for the first time and was rather disappointed. The resolution of shields and armor isn't even higher than RTW textures in the grand scheme of things. So I was wondering, has anyone increased the size of the texture files to get a higher resolution for things like the shields and if they did what sort of effect did it have on performance.

The uvmapping in the mesh file is a composite of the two textures used by the model, changing the size of one might mess up that though I think it might be ok if you stick with the same lenght/width ratio. Doubling the size of one of the existing textures would take up four times the amount of memory and you would actually gain very little in image quality unless you reworked the texture. A far better solution would be to remap the shields to make use of some of the empty space on the texture. But you'd need to be able to texture for that.

I know all that. So long as proportions are maintained the UV mapping is fine. I am inquiring if anyone has gone ahead and doubled the size to see the performance hit. In RTW the performance hit caused by double the texture size was none existent. I wonder what the hit on the engine is like in M2.

I gave you your answer, 4 times the hit of the original texture. What actual effect that has ingame depends on your pc and will differ from system to system. Unless you're running at an insane resolution you're never going to see a larger texture anyways, the engine will use whichever mipmap corresponds closest to the size of the model on screen and something like a shield is never going fill enough of the screen to use the largest resolution.
