    Default Repetative Units for Carthage

Why do Carthage have so many spearmen/repetative units that do exactly the same jobs?

    Spears/pikes:
    elite african pikemen
    sacred band
    libyan spearmen
    heavy libyan spearmen
    libyan-phoenician spearmen
    heavy libyan-phoenician spearmen
    others

    Infantry (swords):
    Light iberian infantry
    Heavy iberian infantry
    Assault iberian infantry
    elite african infantry
    others

Well, couldn't the same be said of any faction? Why do the steppe factions have so many horse archers?

The gradations in similar units is what you'll find for every faction, but remember that just because a unit is a spear unit doesn't mean that it has the same battlefield role of another. Pikemen do not do the same thing as Thureophoroi/Libyan spearman.

what I'm concerned about is spears having less lethality/attack rate than swords

I think Carthage's infantry...libyan/heavy libyan...are getting the short end of the stick.
They already have craploads of spears to counter cavalry

Looking at the Unit cards project I can already tell you that the lethality factor is not always the case. It seems as though most have a lethality of 0.13 for spears, which is similar for the swords of the more elite sword units.

Also, don't forget that the spear was a very common and popular weapon and not just for fighting against cavalry..

Carthage's strenght is also in its cavalry, don't forget that it's the numidian and celtic/iberian cavalry that the romans feared the most (cannae battlefield was ironically chosen because the terrain was considered as tactical element to shield them from the flanking of numidians and iberians), even though the heavier carthaginian infantry proved often to be a match for the legion as long as it was properly supported (there are many accounts of iberian and african veterans holding up even after the rest of the army fled the battlefield)...

Short swords get 0.1. Falcatas get 0.1(1) AP. Good short swords and mid-sized ones get 0.13. Overhand spears get 0.13.

I fail to see the problem.

Sure, longswords do 0.225, but they're mainly used by "barbarians" anyway and the sugar-daddy Carthies can hire those too...

The main weapon of most ancient infantry was the spear. And if you classified all the various types of spearmen under one or two simple units...The game would suck.

This was true almost up to until late 1600s Even 19th century infantry still utilised spear warfare through bayonets.
