One Faction at a Time Project

I'm a big fan of Osprey publishing, especially some of their artists like Angus McBride and Graham Turner. So in the spirit of their work I decided I would slowly work my way through the factions (hence 'one faction at a time' hence forth known as OFTP) and change the skins to reflect more the reality of medieval equipment.

Its a long haul to change everything (especially with the new texture system) but I plan to do it. I've been revamping the Byzantines recently and that will probably be my first release. I've changed all the shields already for the faction and have re-skinned the mercenary Norman knights. Once the entire faction is completed I will release it and start work on the next faction and release it then move onto the next etc etc. Feel free to comment on work and even request which faction you'd like to see next or even how I should approach particular units. I don't plan on editing the models.db file simply because I would like these to work with existing mods etc. Below you can see the first screens of the Byzantine faction re-skin.

nice. I am looking forward to this mod. if you are revamping the byz the make sure to give them a heavy spear unit with appropriate shield.

Sounds very good. Byzantines certainly need it and those Latin Knights look great.

Are you a modeler too or just a texture man?

I can do basic modelling, helmets, weapons, shields etc. A complex model like a person or something like that is a bit out side of my skill.

Just a little up date to assure people I'm making good progress. All the shields are done for the byzantine faction. As well I have finished the first armor level for the greek heavy armor. Screens here and updated in first post:

Finished the armor upgrade for the "greek" armor. Here are some previews of the Byzantine infantry and Varangian Guard.

great stuff -the byzies certainly needed a lift. the spanish yellow is a bit on the unbearable side too.
    It's not a map.

I have finished the starting peasants armor (not the upgrade yet). It was no easy task. I originally wanted to do full single color stuff but the set up of the models (the randomization) kept me from doing that. In the end I think they turned out. In the pics you can see the two units, one of which has been upgraded to silver armor so you can see how the oval shields work with the upgraded heavier armor.

Wait, do the peasants normally have kite or oval shields? And for that matter, are the peasants going to have better stats, now that they have a shield and a real spear?

Pictured are the Byzantine and Militia spearmen. I refer to it as peasant textures because these textures are used for the peasants, byz/militia spearmen, and archers.

Finished the "peasant" upgraded armor. The game calls it padded leather so that was the theme I stuck with. I also added in chain mail to give them a more "upgraded" look. So once upgraded they look like a unit that fills the gap between the heavier infantry and the peasantry.

What's more awesome than a mod making sweet new historical textures?

A mod with a really active worker.

General and Captain are completed. What does that mean? Not much longer until my first release. I'm really happy with these guys I think they turned out great.

Sweet. One question - you reskinned the Kata's mounts, but not the light horse mounts. Was this intentional or something that can't be modded?

They will be included in an update released on Friday June 1st. The update will also include some fixes for normal maps and a fix for a CA model (the latinkon).

If you're wondering I am doing alot more DB editing and so units that shared the same mail textures will all be different.

After hours of work creating detailed shield patterns I have finally finished, what has become my favourite unit, the Druzhina. Pictured is the ugraded and base versions. 10 completely unique shields are used by the unit, fully re-made, hand painted armor textures for for the upgraded version and new and improved anti-veils.
